Which way to face while studying or working, where practitioners put a study versus a home office, desk placement, daylight from the side, children's study corners and WFH nooks in flats.
About the advice below: Vastu guidance on studies and home offices is a tradition, and practitioners disagree on several points; we say who recommends what. The daylight advice comes from workplace-safety guides, and the room and window minimums from India's Model Building Bye-Laws 2016, which each state adapts. The room in the worked example is illustrative.
The one point Vastu practitioners agree on is the seat: face north or east while you study or work. Where the room itself should go is less settled. Common guides put a child's study in the north, north-east or east, and a work-from-home office in the south-west, west or south. Within the room, place the desk so daylight comes from the side, ideally from your left if you are right-handed. Facing east with a north window on your left meets both the Vastu rule and the daylight advice.
This guide covers the desk and the room. For the whole house, start with our practical Vastu guide for a new home.
Three widely read guides from Indian home brands say the same thing:
These guides tie the rule to memory, focus and success. There is no scientific evidence that the direction you face changes how well you study or work; people follow it as tradition. As the section on light shows, though, a north- or east-facing desk can also be a well-lit one.
The guides split here, and it helps to know why an adviser might tell you something different from what you read.
If the zones conflict with your plan, the seat direction is the rule most people can follow in any room. To read zones on your own plan, our explainer on modern Vastu and the science behind it covers compass readings and their pitfalls.
Practitioner advice on the desk itself is mostly about what surrounds it:
Workplace-safety agencies have studied desk lighting closely, and their advice fits well with the Vastu facing rule.
So the window belongs at your side, not in front or behind. Which side is simple geometry: a right-hander's writing hand throws its shadow away from the light, so light from the left keeps the page clear. Left-handers should reverse it. This is practical guidance, not a Vastu rule.
Put the two together. Facing east, your left hand points north; facing north, it points west. In most of India the sun is in the southern sky for most of the year, so a north window gives steady, indirect light, while a west window brings hot afternoon sun. Facing east with a north window on your left is the combination we would aim for. That is our reasoning as designers, not a claim from the texts.
Check the window as well as the desk. Section 4.30.1 of the Model Building Bye-Laws 2016 asks for window openings of at least one-tenth of a room's floor area. That rises to one-sixth in a wet hot climate and one-eighth in an intermediate one. It also says no part of a room counts as lit if it is more than 7.5 m from the opening (pages 66 to 67). For the 3.0 × 3.6 m room in the diagram, 10.8 sq m:
Most children study in their bedroom rather than in a separate room, so the same rules shrink to a corner:
In a flat, you choose the furniture, not the plan. What you can change:
If you are buying, look closely at any room marketed as a "study". The model bye-laws count a study as a habitable room (definition 65, page 8). Habitable rooms have minimum sizes: 9.5 sq m, or 7.5 sq m and 2.1 m wide for a second room (section 4.3.2, page 52). They also need a window to the outside air. A smaller or windowless "study" may have been approved as something else, so ask to see the sanctioned plan.
A nook can be small. In the Opulent Harmony Residence, a 700 sq ft home in Thane by Ammar Khozema Bakri, the desk sits against a dark feature wall with drawers to one side and daylight from the side. A strict Vastu reading would move the open shelves from above the desk to its side. For built-in desk costs, see our room-by-room interior cost guide.
North or east. UltraTech, Nerolac and Design Cafe all give this advice, and they discourage facing south.
Face north or east. For the room, Design Cafe's home-office guide prefers the south-west, west or south of the house and says to avoid the north-west, but other guides differ.
The guides contradict each other. UltraTech prefers a solid wall in front of you; Design Cafe says never to face a blank wall. A pin-board or low shelf in front is a reasonable middle path.
Beside you, not in front or behind, as OSHA and CCOHS advise. For a right-hander, on the left. Facing east with a north window on your left fits Vastu and daylight together.
Yes. Most Indian homes do. Face it north or east and keep shelves beside it rather than overhead.
