Wardrobe and almirah ideas for Indian bedrooms by door type, finish and room size, with real bedrooms by MOA designers, a measured size drawing and 2026 prices.
The best wardrobe design for most Indian bedrooms is a full-height unit about 58 to 60 cm deep, taken to the ceiling with a loft, with hinged shutters if you have about 50 cm of clear floor in front and sliding doors if you do not. Then pick the finish by budget and wear: laminate for value, acrylic or PU for colour and gloss, veneer for real wood, glass or mirror to make the unit feel lighter.
Below are wardrobe and almirah ideas grouped by door type, finish and room size, each with a short "best for" line, real bedrooms by designers on MOA, one measured drawing of standard sizes, and 2026 prices with their sources.
About the numbers below: sizes come from makers' published systems (IKEA PAX and Hettich India), not from an Indian standard: there is no legal wardrobe size, and a carpenter builds to your measurements. Prices are a market range taken from published pages by Asian Paints Beautiful Homes (April 2026), HomeLane (2026), DesignCafe (July 2026) and MOA's own cost guide, checked on 21 Oct 2026. They are not quotes. Rates vary by city, and pages differ on whether installation and GST are included, so ask for both in writing.
| Type | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Hinged | Rooms with 50 cm or more of clear floor in front; tighter budgets | Shutters need swing space as deep as they are wide |
| Sliding | Small rooms, or a bed or door close to the wardrobe wall | Opens only half at a time; adds about 7.5 cm of depth; costs more |
| With loft | Almost every Indian bedroom: suitcases, quilts, off-season clothes | Beams: measure clear height under the beam, not to the ceiling |
| Walk-in | Large master bedrooms with a spare zone or an attached dressing area | Needs a clear aisle of about 3 ft, and costs several lakh |
Best for: standard and large bedrooms where the bed sits well clear of the wardrobe wall, and anyone who wants to see the whole wardrobe at once.
Hinged shutters are the cheapest way to close a wardrobe and the easiest to repair. IKEA India's PAX hinged doors come 50 cm or 25 cm wide and 195 cm or 229 cm tall (IKEA India), which is a good guide for carpenter-made shutters too: the narrower the shutter, the less floor it sweeps when it opens. A split shutter, with a short one above and a tall one below, also lets you open just the part you need.
In Aarthi Roy's Springfeild 54 render, four fluted shutters with long pulls run to the ceiling, and the wardrobe continues sideways into a window seat with drawers, so one built-in does two jobs.
Best for: small bedrooms, and any room where the bed, a door or a window sits within about 50 cm of the wardrobe front.
The catch is access: you only ever see half (or a third) of the wardrobe. Our full comparison of tracks, depths and clearances is in the sliding vs hinged wardrobe guide, so we will not repeat it here.
Best for: nearly every Indian bedroom. Suitcases, quilts and winter clothes have to live somewhere.
India's Model Building Bye-Laws 2016 set the minimum height of a habitable room at 2.75 m, with at least 2.4 m clear under any beam (MoHUA, clause 4.3; state rules can differ). Above a 236 cm wardrobe that leaves about 39 cm for a loft box. If a beam crosses the wardrobe wall, measure under the beam.
ARC STUDIO's Premium Gold render runs the loft as a continuous row of shutters and breaks the side panel with two lit niches, so the full-height unit does not read as a blank wall.
Best for: master bedrooms with a spare corner, or a dressing area between the bedroom and the bathroom.
DesignCafe advises at least 3 feet of clear walking space inside a walk-in, and lists a small 8 ft walk-in (sliding clear-glass shutters, no accessories) at ₹3 lakh, a 12 ft one at ₹5.5 lakh and a 24 ft one at ₹11 lakh (DesignCafe, July 2026). Treat these as one firm's figures, not the market price.
Best for: most budgets and busy family bedrooms.
Laminate is the value finish: Asian Paints' wardrobe cost guide calls it very affordable and notes that high-gloss acrylic pushes the price up (Asian Paints Beautiful Homes). It comes matt, glossy, textured and in wood grains. Use a light liner inside so clothes are easy to see.
Studio MAJ's 001-MG render shows how a wood-grain front, which can be done in laminate or veneer, sits well with white: a band of round knobs breaks the tall doors, and the study desk continues the same materials along the window.
Best for: a high-gloss, mirror-like front in a strong colour.
Greenply describes acrylic as having a smoother finish and higher gloss than laminate, and recommends wiping it with a soft microfibre cloth rather than a rough scrubber (Greenply). Gloss reflects everything, so place lights with care, and expect to pay more than for laminate.
Best for: custom colours, shaker or profiled shutters, and a seamless painted look.
Asian Paints says PU coatings come in matte, satin and glossy finishes and protect against scratches, stains and abrasion (Asian Paints). HomeLane lists PU alongside acrylic for premium shutters. Because it is painted on, PU can follow mouldings and curves that a sheet finish cannot.
Best for: real wood grain in a master bedroom.
Veneer is a thin sheet of natural wood, 0.6 to 6 mm thick by Greenply's description, bonded to a board. Greenply warns that long sun exposure can lighten it and excess water can make it swell or lift (Greenply). It costs more than laminate because it has to be polished, which Asian Paints puts down to the extra labour.
Best for: a wardrobe that should feel light, or one that is partly for display.
In AAY Designs' Utsava home, reeded glass blurs the clothes behind it while solid lower panels hide shoes and boxes. Our guidance: ask for toughened glass in shutters, and keep clear glass for a wardrobe you are happy to keep tidy.
Best for: small bedrooms with no room for a separate dressing mirror.
ELLE DECOR India lists mirror wardrobe shutters in master bedrooms among common uses of glass at home, and notes that Saint-Gobain sells a shatterproof mirror, SGG Mirasafe, for extra safety (ELLE DECOR India). On a sliding door, a mirror panel also makes a narrow room look wider. Ask for a safety-backed mirror on any shutter in a child's room.
These room sizes are our guidance for planning, not a standard.
Across the bedrooms above, a few details repeat:

Wardrobes are usually priced per square foot of shutter face, and that rate covers the whole box behind it. From the published sources (a market range, not a quote):
Worked example, as arithmetic on that range: the 200 by 236 cm wardrobe in our drawing has about 51 sq ft of shutter face, so roughly ₹61,000 to ₹1.27 lakh before the loft and accessories. Before you sign, ask whether the rate includes installation, the inside finish and GST. If you are budgeting a whole home, MOA's free home cost calculator covers the construction side.
There is no Indian standard. Modular systems work to about 58 cm deep and 201 or 236 cm tall, with hinged shutters 50 cm wide, and a loft above to reach the ceiling. Sliding doors add about 7.5 cm of depth.
Laminate for value and hard daily use; acrylic if you want a high-gloss front and can pay more. In a dark or very bright bedroom, a matt laminate shows fewer reflections.
Published 2026 figures range from about ₹1,200 to ₹2,500 per sq ft of shutter face, depending on board, finish and hardware. Sliding doors and accessories cost extra.
Usually a full-height sliding wardrobe with one mirror panel and a loft, because it needs no swing space. Narrow hinged shutters also work if you have about 50 cm clear in front.
On a solid wall without a window, clear of the door swing and with room in front to open it. If you follow vastu, our vastu guide for bedrooms covers placement.
