Bunk, twin, trundle or loft bed, one long desk or two: to-scale plans for two kids in a 10 x 11 or 11 x 12 ft room, storage that grows, a sourced safety checklist and dated prices.
For two kids in a 10 × 10 or 10 × 11 ft room, the layout that fits best is a bunk bed on one wall and one long shared study table, about 1,800 × 600 mm, so each child gets a 900 mm place. From about 11 × 12 ft, two single beds in an L leave room for two separate desks. In both, split the wardrobe down the middle and anchor every tall piece to the wall.
About the numbers below: furniture sizes and prices come from IKEA India's product pages and mattress sizes from Kurlon, all read on 21 October 2026; IKEA's prices include taxes but not delivery or assembly. Safety rules come from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and IKEA, because we could not find an Indian bunk bed standard we could open and read. The custom carpentry figure is a market range published by NoBroker in June 2026; it does not include installation, and it does not say whether GST is included. Sizes marked "our guidance" are common practice, not a rule.
Start with the floor area, not the theme. Two beds, two study places and two wardrobe halves are the fixed load; whatever floor is left is the play area. A standard Indian single mattress is 36 inches wide and 72 to 78 inches long (Kurlon), so each bed frame takes roughly 1,000 × 2,000 mm.
| Room size | Beds | Study table |
|---|---|---|
| 9 × 10 ft or smaller | Loft bed plus a trundle, or a bunk | Desk under the loft, or a wall-hung fold-down desk |
| 10 × 10 to 10 × 11 ft | Bunk bed | One shared desk, 1,800 × 600 mm |
| 11 × 12 ft and up | Two single beds in an L | Two desks, 900 × 550 mm each |
The table is our guidance, based on the two plans below; your door and window positions decide the final fit.
In the bunk plan, the bunk takes the solid wall, the desk sits under the window and the wardrobe takes the third wall, leaving about 1.1 × 1.0 m of clear floor.
In the twin plan, the beds meet at a corner table, so neither blocks the middle of the room, and the wardrobe keeps 800 mm clear in front for hinged shutters.
A bunk saves one whole bed footprint, about 2 sq m, which in a 10 × 11 ft room is the difference between a play floor and none. IKEA's TUFFING bunk, for example, is 207 cm long, 96.5 cm wide and 130.5 cm high, and takes a mattress no thicker than 11 cm (IKEA). IKEA recommends its upper bunks only for children from 6 years. We found loft beds but no bunk beds on IKEA's India site on 21 October 2026, so most Indian families buy a bunk from another retailer or have a carpenter build one.
Choose it when the children are close in age, the older one is at least 6, and the room is under 11 ft on one side. A staircase of drawers is easier to climb than a straight ladder (our view) and adds storage, but it needs about 400 to 500 mm more length (our guidance).
Two single beds suit siblings with a few years between them, or a boy and a girl who will want their own corner later. They need the most floor, so plan on 11 × 12 ft, and set them in an L rather than side by side.
A trundle is a second, lower mattress that rolls out from under the main bed. By day the room has one bed's footprint; at night the floor beside it must be clear. It suits young children and small rooms, at the cost of making and stowing a bed every day.
A loft bed lifts one child's bed up and puts a desk underneath. IKEA India's VITVAL loft bed with desk top is 195 cm high, with 150 cm of free height under the bed and a 95 × 45 cm desk top at 73 cm. It needs a ceiling of at least 240 cm and a mattress no thicker than 13 cm, and IKEA says it must be anchored to the wall (IKEA India).
For two kids, pair a loft bed with a floor bed or a trundle; the second child then needs a desk elsewhere.
One double bed for two young siblings is simple and cheap. Kurlon lists a diwan or double mattress as 48 × 72 to 78 inches, and its frame needs about 1,300 mm of width (our guidance), so it will not fit our L plan. Plan the wardrobe and desk wall so a later switch to a bunk or two beds needs no new carpentry.
One long desk is the best use of a window wall. Allow at least 900 mm of width per child (our guidance). IKEA India's PÅHL kids' desk is 96 × 58 cm and sets to 59, 66 or 72 cm high as a child grows; it cost ₹4,900 on 21 October 2026 (IKEA India). A carpenter-built 1,800 × 600 mm top on two drawer units does the same job in one piece.
Two desks are better when the children are of different ages and need different desk heights. IKEA India's RELATERA desks come in 90 × 60 cm (₹7,990) and 117 × 60 cm (₹8,990) (IKEA India).
We could not find a light level for a home study desk in an Indian standard we could open in full, so we do not quote one.
Split one wardrobe into two equal halves, 900 mm each in our plans. Inside, use shelves on adjustable pins and a hanging rail that can be raised later: low rail and more drawers while the children are small, a long-hanging section when they are teenagers (our guidance). For depths, sliding versus hinged doors and internal fittings, see our wardrobe design guide.
Low open shelves, 300 to 400 mm deep (our guidance), hold toy bins at floor level now and school books later. Under-bed drawers take bedding and out-of-season clothes. Avoid themed carpentry such as a car-shaped bed or a cartoon laminate: it is the first thing a 10-year-old asks to change.
The layouts work for any two children. What changes is colour and decoration, which should be the cheapest things in the room to replace (our view).
Simple Indian style can be as plain as cotton dhurries, a cane chair and block-printed bedspreads on a pale wall. For colour choices by direction, see Vastu for children's rooms; for this year's palette, see Bedroom Trends 2027.
Under 10 × 10 ft, every piece must do two jobs (our guidance): a loft bed with a desk below for the older child and a trundle for the younger one, a sliding wardrobe that needs no swing space, a fold-down wall desk, and lofts up to the ceiling. Check the ceiling first: the VITVAL loft bed needs at least 240 cm, and beams in older flats can be lower.
A shared room can be furnished off the shelf or built in. Here are dated prices you can check.

Market range, custom carpentry: NoBroker's June 2026 guide puts a kids' wardrobe with study table at ₹30,000 to ₹1,00,000, and a loft bed with wardrobe and desk at ₹60,000 to ₹1,50,000, depending on finish. Installation of ₹5,000 to ₹12,000 may be charged separately, and the guide does not say whether GST is included (NoBroker). A bunk bed, if the older child is at least 6 (IKEA's age for upper bunks). If not, a loft bed for the older child and a trundle for the younger one.
About 1,800 × 600 mm shared, or two desks of about 900 × 550 mm (our guidance). A height-adjustable desk such as IKEA's PÅHL lasts longer.
IKEA says upper bunks are not suitable for children under 6. At any age, the top bunk needs guard rails on both sides, at least 5 inches above the mattress (CPSC).
Off the shelf, an IKEA India loft bed costs ₹12,990 to ₹23,990 and a kids' desk ₹4,900 to ₹7,990. Built in, NoBroker's June 2026 range for a loft bed with wardrobe and desk is ₹60,000 to ₹1,50,000, before installation.
