Where the mirror goes on a wardrobe, how big it needs to be, the safety glass and lighting to ask for, and how to build a seated or standing dresser into the wardrobe wall, with a scale elevation and plan.
For a wardrobe design with a mirror, put the full-length mirror on a shutter or panel with open floor in front of it, and make it at least half your height. For a wardrobe with a dressing table, build the dresser into the same run as a counter about 75 cm high and 40 to 45 cm deep, with lights on both sides of its mirror and a socket for the hair dryer.
Below: where the mirror goes, its size and glass, the lighting, and a dresser built into the wardrobe wall, drawn to scale. Doors, finishes, internal sizes and rates are in our guides Wardrobe Design for Bedroom: Ideas for Indian Homes, Wardrobe Designs for Small Bedrooms and Wardrobe Price per sq ft in India 2026.
About the numbers below: sizes and prices come from the maker or standards page named next to them, read on 21 Oct 2026. Where no maker or standard gives a figure, we say it is our guidance (common practice). Prices are IKEA India list prices on that date and will change.
There are four places for it. The right one depends on the floor in front of the wardrobe and whether you want the mirror on show.
A mirror on one tall shutter is the most common almirah design with a mirror. Put it on the shutter that faces open floor, not the one beside the bed, so you can step back and see your whole outfit. A whole wall of mirrored shutters makes a room feel twice as big, but it also reflects everything in the room, including the bed.
Many Indian families prefer that a mirror does not face the bed, which is a vastu rule; our vastu guide for bedrooms explains it and the usual fixes. In design terms, a mirror facing the window doubles daylight; one facing the bed reflects movement at night.
A mirror adds weight to a shutter. Ask your carpenter to check the hinge maker's load rating for a tall mirror door and to fit one more hinge if in doubt (our guidance).
On a sliding wardrobe, a full-height mirror panel works well because nothing swings into the room. One panel in mirror and one in laminate keeps the look calmer than two mirrors facing the bed. The trade-offs of sliding against hinged doors are in our sliding vs hinged wardrobe guide.
A mirror on the inside face of a shutter is hidden when the wardrobe is shut, which suits a child's room or anyone who prefers no mirror on show. The shutter must open fully, with nothing in its way.
The fourth option is a tall mirror on the wardrobe's end panel, the wall beside it, or a dresser niche in the run, as drawn below. Every shutter stays plain and the mirror can be lit properly.
Smaller than most people think. A flat mirror only needs to be half your height to show all of you, as long as it is hung at the right level. Physicists at the University of Illinois explain that the bottom edge should sit at half your eye height and the top edge a little above your eyes, and that how far you stand from the mirror makes no difference (University of Illinois Physics Van).
For a family, size the mirror for the shortest and the tallest person. A shutter mirror running from about 30 cm to 195 cm off the floor covers a young child and a tall adult (our arithmetic from the rule above). Widths of 40 to 65 cm are enough for one person.
Ready-made mirrors show the range. On 21 Oct 2026 IKEA India listed standing mirrors of 48 × 160 cm at ₹3,990 and 52 × 167 cm at ₹7,990, wall mirrors of 65 × 150 cm at ₹6,490, and a 78 × 196 cm mirror at ₹11,990 (IKEA India mirrors).
The same ELLE DECOR India piece notes bronze and grey tinted mirrors in Saint-Gobain's range. A tint suits a wall of shutters; keep a clear mirror for the one you dress in, so colours look true (our guidance).
Light the face from both sides, not only from above. A light directly over the mirror throws shadows under the brows, nose and chin. Golden Lighting, a US light maker, writes that side-mounted sconces, with light on both sides of the user, give more even light on the face. It suggests centring them about 60 inches (152 cm) above the floor as a starting point, then adjusting to the user's eye level (Golden Lighting).
The neatest way to get a wardrobe with a dressing table is to give the dresser its own bay in the wardrobe wall: an open niche between two wardrobe sections, with a counter, a mirror, lights and closed storage above. The drawing shows a 10 ft run: 150 cm of wardrobe, a 90 cm dresser and a 60 cm tall unit with a full-length mirror shutter.
Indian designers often put the dresser in a slim niche between the wardrobe and the door, as in the render below, so the mirror is the first thing you pass on the way out.
| Seated dresser | Standing dresser | |
|---|---|---|
| Counter height | About 75 to 78 cm. IKEA's MALM dressing table is 78 cm high (IKEA). | About 90 to 100 cm, near kitchen counter height (our guidance). |
| Counter depth | 40 to 48 cm. IKEA India's dressing tables run 41 to 48 cm deep (IKEA India). | 25 to 35 cm is enough, since no one sits at it (our guidance). |
| Width | 70 to 120 cm; IKEA India's range runs from 70 cm (BRIMNES) to 120 cm (MALM). | 60 cm or more (our guidance). |
| Below | Clear knee space and a stool about 45 cm high that tucks in (our guidance). | Drawers or a closed cabinet right to the floor. |
| Best for | Make-up, hair, jewellery, daily use. | Small rooms, quick touch-ups, a ledge across the wardrobe front. |
A seated dresser needs more floor; a standing ledge suits a room with no space for a stool.
A dresser built into the wardrobe needs floor in front of it for the stool, and the full-length mirror needs floor in front of it to step back. In a 12 × 11 ft bedroom, that works if the mirror bay sits past the foot of the bed.
In a 10 × 10 ft room there is rarely space for a separate dressing table. Three options work:
Ready-made pieces give a floor price. On 21 Oct 2026, IKEA India listed dressing tables from ₹5,990 (BRIMNES, 70 × 42 cm) to ₹9,990 (MALM, 120 × 41 cm) (IKEA India), and full-length mirrors from ₹3,990 (IKEA India).
A built-in dresser and mirror shutter are usually quoted with the wardrobe, and we found no maker's published rate for either on its own, so we do not give one. Wardrobe Price per sq ft in India 2026 explains how quotes are measured. When comparing quotes, ask that the mirror glass and its backing, the lights, the driver and the socket be listed separately. Room-by-room budgets are in our interior design cost guide, and MOA's free home cost calculator gives a first estimate.
Yes. Use a safety-backed mirror, put it on the shutter that faces open floor, and check the hinges can carry the weight.
For a seated dresser, about 75 to 78 cm; IKEA's MALM is 78 cm high and 41 cm deep. A standing dresser ledge sits higher, about 90 to 100 cm (our guidance).
At least half your height, with the bottom edge at half your eye height. For a whole family, a mirror from about 30 cm to 195 cm off the floor works.
Lights on both sides of the mirror at face height, in warm white with CRI 90 or above. A light only above the mirror casts shadows on the face.
Many families avoid it for vastu reasons. A side wall, a niche in the wardrobe run or the inside of a shutter avoids the question.
