Plan a master bedroom for two: to-scale layouts for 12 x 12 and 14 x 16 ft rooms, queen or king bed, a bedside zone each, split storage, AC, curtains and privacy.
Good bedroom design for a couple starts with the plan, not the finishes: a bed both people can reach from their own side, a bedside zone each with its own light and switch, storage split down the middle, and an AC and curtains that suit two different sleepers. A 12 x 12 ft master bedroom fits a queen bed, a sliding wardrobe and a slim dresser; at 14 x 16 ft you can add a king bed, a work corner and a small sitting area.
About the numbers below: mattress sizes are from Duroflex and Kurlon, AC sizes from LG India, wiring limits from the Government of India's NIMI electrician textbook and the desk size from IKEA India, read on 21 October 2026. Costs are a market range from two published guides, read on 22 October 2026. Unsourced sizes and placements are common practice, marked "our guidance".
Choose the bed first, because it decides everything else. Duroflex gives the standard Indian queen as 78 x 60 inches (198 x 152 cm) and the king as 78 x 72 inches (198 x 183 cm). It says a queen suits rooms of 10 x 10 to 12 x 14 ft, and that in a room smaller than 12 x 12 ft a king "may overpower the space" (Duroflex). Kurlon lists the same widths, in lengths of 72 to 78 inches (Kurlon).
| Bed | Mattress (Duroflex) | Frame, about (our guidance) | Room it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Queen | 78 x 60 in (198 x 152 cm) | 1,650 x 2,100 mm | 10 x 10 to 12 x 14 ft |
| King | 78 x 72 in (198 x 183 cm) | 1,950 x 2,100 mm | 12 x 14 ft and larger |
Measure the frame you are buying, not the mattress: a padded headboard adds more. The extra foot of a king matters most if one of you moves a lot at night or a child often ends up in the bed. Kurlon advises at least 2 to 3 ft of walking space around the bed, and for a bed with a hydraulic lift, Duroflex suggests 3 to 4 ft clear in front of it.
A 12 x 12 ft room (144 sq ft) is a common master bedroom in Indian flats. This plan keeps the bed centred, so neither person is pushed against a wall.
There is no room for a proper desk here. The dresser top can take a laptop.
Put the headboard on a 12 ft wall and use the extra 2 ft at the foot. The space in front of the wardrobe grows to about 1,560 mm, so hinged shutters work, and a 1,050 x 500 mm desk fits along the window wall. This is also the smallest room where we would fit a king bed: centred, it leaves about 850 mm each side (our guidance).
A two-sided walk-in wardrobe is the other use for a big room: 600 mm of hanging each side and a 900 mm aisle need about 7 ft of clear width (our guidance).
Most arguments in a shared bedroom are about light: one reads, the other sleeps; one wakes at 5.30 for a walk, the other at 8. Give each side:
Our coming post on bed back wall design covers the heights of reading lights and switch plates, and the headboard wall itself.
Brief your electrician before the walls are chased. The NIMI electrician textbook, from the Government of India's training directorate, says a light and fan sub-circuit should have no more than ten points and 800 watts, and a power sub-circuit should normally be limited to 3,000 watts and two outlets (NIMI). For a couple, our guidance:
Split the wardrobe wall clearly: at least 4 ft per person in a 12 x 12 ft room and 5 ft where space allows (our guidance), each with its own hanging, shelves and a lockable drawer. Agree who gets the long-hanging section for sarees and kurtas. Then add:
For depths and shutter types, see our wardrobe design guide, sliding vs hinged. Our coming posts on wardrobes for small bedrooms and wardrobes with a dressing table go further.
In a joint family the master bedroom often shares a wall with the parents', the children's or the living room. We did not find a published Indian figure we could check for sound through bedroom doors and walls, so these points are our guidance:
An AC above one side of the bed always chills one person more. Put it high on a side wall, blowing across the foot of the bed, as both plans show and as our bedroom trends for 2027 post also suggests.
For size, LG India's chart gives 1 ton up to 120 sq ft, 1.5 ton for 120 to 180 sq ft (which it calls master bedroom size) and 2 ton for 180 to 240 sq ft, and advises one size up for a room with direct sun, on the top floor or in a very hot city (LG India). On that chart a 12 x 12 or 12 x 14 ft room needs 1.5 ton, and a 14 x 16 ft room (224 sq ft) needs 2 ton.
Two people rarely want the same light at the same time, so our guidance is a double track on every bedroom window:
A curtain pocket in a false ceiling hides both tracks; our coming post on false ceiling design for bedrooms covers its depth.
A simple bedroom for two needs a few things done well: the bed centred with a zone each side, one long wardrobe wall, a mirror that does not face the bed, curtains that close completely and lights you can switch from the bed. Panelling, a false ceiling or a feature wall can come later. For the traditional view on room and bed direction, see our Vastu guide for the master bedroom.
Market range: about ₹1.5 lakh to ₹3.5 lakh for a mid-range master bedroom. Asian Paints' Beautiful Homes guide (15 June 2026) gives ₹1.5 to 3.5 lakh for "a standard master bedroom with a full-wall wardrobe" in a metro, and names the wardrobe, false ceiling, wall treatment, bed back panel and lighting as the main items (Asian Paints). DesignCafe (27 August 2026) gives the same ₹1.5 to 3.5 lakh for a master suite with one major wardrobe, a standard bed frame and side tables, with a modular wardrobe at ₹70,000 to ₹2,00,000 and a bed with headboard at ₹35,000 to ₹1,20,000 (DesignCafe). Neither says whether GST is included, and both firms sell interiors, so treat these as indicative.

12 x 12 ft fits a queen bed, a bedside zone each, an 8 ft wardrobe and a slim dresser. 12 x 14 ft adds a desk; 14 x 16 ft adds a king bed and a sitting area.
A queen (78 x 60 inches) suits most couples and rooms from 10 x 10 to 12 x 14 ft. Duroflex says a king (78 x 72 inches) may overpower a room smaller than 12 x 12 ft.
On a wall without a window, facing the foot of the bed or along a side wall, with about 900 mm clear in front for sliding shutters and more for hinged ones (our guidance). Split it so each person has a half.
In 12 x 12 ft, only as a shelf or a desk built into the wardrobe. From 12 x 14 ft, a 1,050 x 500 mm desk fits along a side wall.
Fit a solid-core door with seals, put the wardrobe on the shared wall, seal the AC pipe hole and have the door open onto the foot of the bed.
