How big and how high a mirror over a wash basin should be, LED mirrors with demister and IP44, black edges and how to stop them, fixing methods, mirrors in living rooms and small rooms, and 2026 prices.
For a mirror over a wash basin, choose one no wider than the basin or vanity, centre it on the tap, and keep its bottom edge at least 1200 mm above the floor, which is the minimum in the BIS code for sanitary fittings. Light it from both sides at face height, leave a small gap above the counter so the back can dry, and in a bathroom with a shower pick an LED mirror with a demister and an IP44 rating.
About the numbers below: heights come from BIS codes, and product sizes, ratings and prices from makers' and retailers' pages read on 29 Oct 2026. IKEA India prices include all taxes; CERA's pages do not say whether GST is included. Prices change often. Where no code or maker gives a figure, we say it is our guidance.
This guide covers mirrors beyond the wardrobe: over the basin, in the living room and entrance, full-length mirrors and mirror walls, fixing and cost. Mirrors on wardrobe shutters and dressing tables are in our guide Wardrobe Design with Mirror and Dressing Table, and bathroom layouts in Bathroom Designs for Small Spaces, both being published soon. For styles and fittings, see bathroom trends for 2027.
The Indian code is short and clear. IS 2064: 1993 (clause 7.7.2) says a mirror or a mirror cabinet over the basin is common practice, that each side of the mirror should be at least 450 mm and its area at least 0.20 m², and that its bottom edge should be no lower than 1200 mm from the finished floor. A 450 × 450 mm mirror just meets the area rule.
The rest is proportion (our guidance):
Do not rest the glass on the counter. Stein, a bathroom mirror maker whose fitting guide is sold through Bunnings, requires a gap of at least 16 mm between a mirror and the vanity top, so air reaches the back and water does not collect at the bottom edge (Stein installation instructions). Most Indian bathrooms tile the wall behind the basin up to the mirror; tile heights are in our upcoming guide Bathroom Tiles Design: Wall and Floor.
A mirror cabinet does the same job and holds the daily clutter. In a small bathroom a depth of 100 to 150 mm keeps it clear of your head over the basin (our guidance). IKEA India's TÄNNFORSEN mirror cabinet is 60 × 15 × 95 cm and listed at ₹19,990, and the FAXÄLVEN cabinet of the same size with built-in lighting at ₹23,980 (IKEA TÄNNFORSEN, IKEA FAXÄLVEN cabinet). The TÄNNFORSEN package weighs 17.36 kg, so a cabinet needs screws into brick or RCC, not adhesive.
A light only above the mirror shadows the eyes and chin. Golden Lighting, a US light maker, suggests side lights centred about 60 inches (152 cm) above the floor as a starting point, then adjusted to the user's eye level (Golden Lighting). Colour temperature and CRI are covered in our wardrobe mirror guide.
An LED mirror builds the light into the glass. Read three things on its spec sheet:
Wiring. Kohler's sheets ask for a 220 to 240 V supply and recommend a professional electrician. The wiring code IS 732 (clause 5.1.6.1) says a room with a fixed bath or shower should have no socket outlets except shaver supply units. A BIS note says regulation 44 of the CEA's 2023 safety regulations mandates a residual current device. So plan the mirror's supply before tiling: a concealed connection behind the glass, switched from outside the wet area, on an RCD-protected circuit (our guidance; confirm with your electrician).
The black creep that starts at the edges and corners is the silver layer corroding. Civic, an Australian mirror and shower-screen maker, explains that moisture reaching the silver backing makes it oxidise, that cleaner sprayed straight onto the glass runs down and pools at the edges, and that adhesives with acidic components damage the protective layers (Civic, Mirror Edge Creep). To prevent it:
Buy a mirror with a protected back. CERA's plain bathroom mirrors, for example, are 5 mm glass "with double coat for protection" (CERA).
Start with the weight. Nakajima Glass, a Japanese glass maker, gives about 2.5 kg per m² for every mm of thickness (Nakajima Glass). So a 600 × 750 mm basin mirror in 5 mm glass weighs about 5.6 kg, and a 900 × 1800 mm full-length mirror in 6 mm about 24 kg, before any frame (our arithmetic).
This Old House suggests hangers that hold at least twice the item's weight. In brick or RCC, that means proper plugs and screws; on a gypsum board wall, fix into the studs.
Asian Paints suggests placing mirrors opposite windows or near light sources to reflect daylight into the room (Asian Paints). Two cautions, both our guidance:
At an entrance, a mirror over a console is the classic setting. Make it about as wide as the console, or a little narrower, and hang it with the bottom 150 to 250 mm above the top (our guidance). IKEA India lists the round LINDBYN mirror, 80 cm, at ₹4,990, and says it is tested and approved for bathrooms too (IKEA LINDBYN).
A full-length mirror only needs to be half your height, with its bottom edge at half your eye height; how far you stand makes no difference (University of Illinois Physics Van). Our wardrobe mirror guide works through sizes for a family.
In a small bedroom or a narrow hall, a whole wall of mirror, or mirrored doors on a cupboard, makes the room read about twice as deep. Our guidance:
A mirror at child height can be broken by a ball or a fall. IKEA India says its LETTAN and LINDBYN mirrors carry a safety film that reduces damage if the glass breaks (IKEA LETTAN). Saint-Gobain's MIRALITE EASYSAFE uses a factory-applied resin that retains 98% of fragments and conforms to EN 12600, and cannot be installed as an interior partition (Saint-Gobain product sheet). The Indian code for glass at body height is IS 16231 (Part 4): 2019. Our advice: a safety-backed mirror for every mirror wall and for any mirror whose bottom edge is below about 900 mm. Note that Stein's guide tells you to peel the vinyl film off before gluing a mirror directly to a wall, so ask the supplier which backing suits your fixing.

Sources: IKEA India product pages (prices include all taxes) and CERA's mirror pages (GST not stated). These are product prices only. Kohler's spec sheets give no price. A cut-to-size mirror wall is quoted by a local glass dealer per sq ft, and we found no maker's published rate, so we do not give one. No wider than the basin or vanity, centred on the tap, with each side at least 450 mm and an area of at least 0.20 m², as IS 2064 asks.
Its bottom edge at least 1200 mm above the floor (IS 2064), and at least 16 mm above the counter if it sits close to it (Stein). The top usually lands between 1900 and 2100 mm.
For a bathroom with a shower, an LED mirror with a demister pad and an IP44 rating, wired by an electrician on an RCD circuit. For a dry powder room, a plain mirror with side lights is enough.
Moisture and harsh or acidic chemicals reach the silver backing and corrode it. Leave a gap behind and below the glass, fix it with neutral-cure silicone, spray cleaner onto a cloth and keep the room ventilated.
On 29 Oct 2026, IKEA India listed plain mirrors from ₹1,090, an IP44 LED mirror at ₹13,980 and mirror cabinets at ₹19,990 to ₹23,980.
