How to plan a small hall that is also the dining room, puja corner, study and guest room: a clear path from the door, multi-use furniture, fans, light and to-scale plans for 10 x 12 and 12 x 15 ft.
Good hall design for a small Indian house starts with one decision: keep a clear path about 1 m wide from the main door to the kitchen and bedrooms, and put everything else beside it, not across it. Then choose furniture that changes job through the day, such as a diwan that becomes a guest bed, nesting tables and a fold-down table, so a 10 x 12 to 12 x 15 ft hall can be sitting room, dining room, puja corner, study and spare bedroom at once.
About the numbers below: furniture sizes and prices are from IKEA India, read on 29 October 2026, including taxes (delivery and assembly extra). Room and window rules are from the Model Building Bye-Laws 2016, fan sizes from Atomberg and Bajaj, painting rates from Asian Paints and false-ceiling rates from Design Cafe. Paint and ceiling figures are market ranges, not quotes. Anything marked "our guidance" is common practice, not a standard.
Our coming guides cover the rest of the room: Indian-style living room design, sofa sizes for small living rooms, TV units for small halls and low-cost interior ideas. If your family follows Vastu, Vastu for the living room covers seating direction; this post is about layout.
In a 1BHK or 2BHK flat, or a compact independent house, the hall is the entrance, the dining room, often the puja corner, the children's study, the guest bedroom when relatives stay, and the corridor everyone crosses to reach the kitchen and bedrooms. It works when these jobs take turns instead of competing, so plan it twice: once for the day and once for the evening.
Before choosing furniture, mark where people walk: main door to kitchen, main door to each bedroom, kitchen to table. Our guidance is to pull these lines into one band about 1 m wide along a wall, and never let it run between the seats and their table. Keep the main door's swing clear, and let whoever carries hot food reach the table without passing between the sofa and the TV.
The 1 m figure has a basis: the Model Building Bye-Laws 2016 set 1.00 m as the minimum passage or corridor width in dwelling-unit residential buildings (clause 4.24.7, page 61). That sits in the fire-exit rules for larger buildings, not a rule for your hall, but it lets two people pass. Our other guides treat 900 mm as the least to accept.
A 10 x 12 ft hall is about 11.1 sq m, which already clears the bye-law minimum for a habitable room of 9.5 sq m and 2.4 m width where there is only one room (clause 4.3.2, page 52). "Small" here is about how many jobs the room does.
| Hall size | Area | Typical home | What fits beside a 1 m path (our guidance) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 x 12 ft | 120 sq ft | 1BHK or compact 2BHK flat | A diwan, nest of tables, fold-down table for two, wall-hung puja and shoe cabinet |
| 11 x 14 ft | 154 sq ft | 2BHK flat | A three-seater or diwan, nest of tables, dining for four at the kitchen end |
| 12 x 15 ft | 180 sq ft | Independent house or larger 2BHK | A diwan, two moodhas, dining for six, a full storage wall with puja |
With a 1 m path on one side, a 10 ft hall leaves about 2 m for living: one long seat and a small table. Make the long seat a diwan with drawers rather than a sofa. IKEA India's HEMNES day-bed frame with three drawers is 209 x 91 cm, its base pulls out into a 160 x 200 cm double bed, and each drawer takes 20 kg (IKEA India). It seats three by day and sleeps a guest at night, with the bedding in its drawers.
The other pieces earn their place the same way:
One extra foot of width leaves about 2.35 m after the path: a seat on one long wall, a nest of tables and a low partition or console between seating and path. Use the extra length for a table for four at the kitchen end, so food never crosses the sitting area, as in the diagram above.
Here the room splits into a dining and study end near the kitchen and a sitting and guest end near the door, with the path along one side and a storage wall for books, crockery and the puja. Our guidance for that wall: 300 to 400 mm deep, closed below, a few open shelves above, and a shelf at child height for school books.
Where a family of four to six sits (our guidance): by day, three on the diwan, two on moodhas and one at the table with homework; at dinner, six round a 140 x 80 cm table, two of them on folding chairs at the ends; overnight, the diwan opens to a double bed and the nest of tables and moodhas go to the wall.
Dining. Put the table at the kitchen end. It shortens every trip with hot food, and the table doubles as the study desk in the afternoon.
Puja corner. Our guidance: doors or a jaali shutter, its own light and switch, away from the shoe cabinet and out of the path so nobody brushes past a lamp. Our pooja room design guide for apartments has sizes and layouts.
Children's study. By day the table becomes a desk with a task lamp and books on the storage wall. Our view: a child studying in the hall is a child someone can see, which many parents prefer.
A hall that is also the dining room collects cooking smells and heat, so air matters as much as furniture.
The bye-laws set 2.75 m, about 9 ft, as the minimum floor-to-ceiling height for habitable rooms (clause 4.3.1.1, page 51). At that height the fan hangs on a short rod, and a false-ceiling band should stop short of the fan rather than lower it (our guidance).
One tube light cannot serve homework, dinner, a puja and a film. Our guidance is four layers, each on its own switch:
Place switches with the furniture plan, before the electrician comes, so the diwan lamp switches on by the diwan. For fittings and colour temperatures, see lighting trends for 2027.
Indian style here comes from use more than decoration: a diwan, moodhas, a puja with a jaali shutter, washable cotton cushions.
We found no published per-sq-ft rate for a complete hall, so here are the pieces in this post:
| Item | Source and date | Price |
|---|---|---|
| HEMNES day-bed with three drawers and two 80 x 200 cm mattresses | IKEA India, 29 Oct 2026 | ₹53,970 (frame alone ₹39,990) |
| NORBERG wall-mounted drop-leaf table | IKEA India, 29 Oct 2026 | ₹6,990, wall fixings extra |
| VITTSJÖ nest of tables, set of two | IKEA India, 29 Oct 2026 | ₹6,990 |
| GUNDE folding chair | IKEA India, 29 Oct 2026 | ₹950 each |
That multi-use set for a 10 x 12 ft hall comes to ₹69,850 with two folding chairs, including taxes, before delivery and assembly (our arithmetic).
Market ranges, paint and ceiling: Asian Paints puts interior painting at ₹12 to ₹45 per sq ft of paintable area, and does not say whether GST is included (Asian Paints). A 10 x 12 ft hall with a 9 ft ceiling has about 500 sq ft of wall and ceiling before doors and windows, so roughly ₹6,000 to ₹22,500; a 12 x 15 ft hall about 670 sq ft, roughly ₹8,000 to ₹30,000 (our arithmetic). Design Cafe's false-ceiling planning ranges, published 10 September 2026, are ₹78 per sq ft for gypsum, ₹75 to ₹120 for POP and ₹70 to ₹160 for PVC, without saying whether labour or GST is included; lights and wiring are often extra (Design Cafe). Gypsum over a 120 sq ft hall comes to about ₹9,360 at that rate. Get three local quotes.

Mark a 1 m path from the main door to the kitchen and bedrooms along one wall, then fit a diwan with storage, a nest of tables, a table at the kitchen end and one storage wall that includes the puja.
A 1200 mm sweep, which Bajaj and Atomberg give for 100 to 150 sq ft, with blades 8 to 9 ft above the floor. From about 150 sq ft, such as 11 x 14 or 12 x 15 ft, use 1400 mm.
In a 12 x 15 ft hall: three on a diwan, two on moodhas and one at the table by day, and six round a 140 x 80 cm table at dinner.
The Model Building Bye-Laws 2016 set 9.5 sq m and 2.4 m width for a habitable room where there is only one, and 2.75 m floor to ceiling. Check your city's own bye-laws.
