Showcase design for the hall: glass showcase vs open shelves, shelf spacing for books and brass, how much a wall shelf holds, fixing into brick, AAC and gypsum, child safety and 2026 prices.
A good showcase design for a hall keeps the pieces you want to look at behind glass and the things you use on open shelves: a glass showcase about 350 mm deep for idols, trophies and brass, starting about 850 mm off the floor, and open wall shelves about 250 mm deep for books and family photos, with gaps of 250 to 330 mm. Then fix each shelf to suit the wall: a plug rated for 55 kg in brick is rated for 15 kg in AAC block, and gypsum needs plywood backing or a cavity anchor.
About the numbers below: loads, sizes and prices come from makers' and retailers' pages (IKEA India, fischer, Hilti, Häfele) opened on 29 October 2026 and linked where used. Sizes no maker publishes are marked "our guidance". The price lines at the end are a market range, not a quote.
This post covers display and open storage. Glass types, TV height and wall panels are in our coming posts on crockery unit design, TV unit design for the living room and wall panel design.
Most Indian living rooms need both. The choice turns on dust, weight and how often you touch what is on the shelf.
| Glass showcase | Open wall shelves | Niche in the wall | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Idols, brass, silver, trophies, glassware | Books, photo frames, plants, everyday pieces | One or two sculptural pieces |
| Dust | Kept out by doors | Weekly dusting (our guidance) | As open shelves |
| Weight | Glass shelves hold less (see the chart below) | Depends on the bracket and the wall | Sits in the wall, so light pieces only on thin partitions |
| Depth | About 350 mm (our guidance) | 200 to 280 mm (our guidance) | Whatever the wall allows |
The elevation below is a 3.6 m wall, drawn to scale: a full-height glass showcase, the TV over a floating console, and four open shelves.
For how the whole wall is trending, see Living Room Trends 2027.
For books, 250 to 280 mm is enough: IKEA's BILLY bookcase, made for books, is 28 cm deep. Picture ledges can be much shallower; IKEA's MOSSLANDA is 12 cm deep and recommended for pictures up to 45 cm high. Deeper shelves are not simply better: they hold less on hidden supports (see below) and collect clutter at the back.
Set the gaps from what goes on them. The most common paperback size in Amazon KDP's list is 6 × 9 inches, about 229 mm tall, and the largest sizes run to A4, 297 mm (Amazon KDP). From that, our guidance:
Ask for adjustable shelves where you can. BILLY comes with one fixed and four adjustable shelves (IKEA India), so the gaps can follow what you own.
The shelves in the Vedaa residence by skyscraper studio show what makes open shelves work: a few pieces per shelf and plenty of wall between them.
Less than most people think. IKEA rates its 110 cm LACK floating shelf for 10 kg and its 30 cm LACK for 3 kg, "depending on type of wall and fastening" (IKEA India). A 120 cm BERGSHULT shelf holds 20 kg on three brackets but 10 kg on two, and IKEA defines that maximum as the weight "before the shelf is risking to slant" (IKEA India). Heavy books and brass belong on a bookcase shelf like BILLY's, rated at 30 kg, or on a shelf with an extra bracket.
Glass holds less than wood. In the same BESTÅ unit, IKEA rates a glass shelf at 10 kg and a wooden one at 20 kg (IKEA India), and the glass shelves in its BRIMNES glass-door cabinet at 4 kg each (IKEA India). Put brass on wood.
A floating shelf hides its bracket inside the shelf. IKEA's LACK uses hidden suspension brackets that come in the box, with wall screws sold separately (IKEA India). For a carpenter-made shelf, Häfele's concealed supports for wood or masonry walls need a shelf at least 24 mm thick and supports no more than 700 mm apart, and their rating falls as the shelf gets deeper: 200 kg per m² of shelf at 200 mm deep, 140 at 250 mm and 80 at 300 mm, evenly spread (Häfele UK catalogue).
On a 1,200 mm shelf that is about 42 kg at 250 mm deep but 29 kg at 300 mm (our arithmetic). The further the load sits from the wall, the harder it pulls on the top fixings.
IKEA's warning on its wall shelves is short: to stop the shelf falling, it "must be securely anchored. Use suitable screws and plugs for your home. If you are uncertain, seek professional advice" (IKEA India). Suitable depends on the wall, and most Indian flats now mix three kinds. Our post comparing red brick, AAC, fly ash and concrete block explains how to tell them apart.
The same goes for wall-hung cabinets: IKEA says the maximum load of a wall-hung EKET cabinet "depends on the wall material" (IKEA India).
Glass doors are the reason to choose a showcase: brass and silver stay cleaner, and you dust the glass, not twenty pieces. For glass types, and why showcase glass should be toughened, see our coming crockery unit post.
For light, our guidance:
A recessed niche is the quietest showcase. It needs depth, so build it into a new partition or a wall built out with a false layer. Our guidance: never cut a niche into a load-bearing or RCC wall without an engineer's approval, and keep light pieces only in niches in thin partitions.
Tall shelves and showcases tip over when children climb them. In the United States, the Consumer Product Safety Commission counted 217 tip-over deaths from 2013 to July 2023, 71 per cent of them children, and estimates 17,800 injuries a year (CPSC). We found no comparable Indian figure. Its advice applies anywhere: anchor bookcases to the wall and store heavier items on lower shelves.
In a 1BHK or compact 2BHK hall, wall-hung units leave the floor clear (our guidance):

For most Indian flats, a glass showcase about 350 mm deep for idols, brass and trophies beside the TV, plus a few open shelves for books and photos.
About 250 to 280 mm for books, and 120 to 200 mm for photo frames and small pieces (our guidance). On hidden supports, shallower shelves hold more: Häfele's rating drops from 200 kg per m² at 200 mm deep to 80 kg per m² at 300 mm.
Ready-made floating shelves at IKEA India are rated for 3 kg (30 cm LACK) to 10 kg (110 cm LACK), properly fixed into a suitable wall. Heavy books and brass need bracketed shelves or a bookcase.
About ₹10,500 to ₹26,500 ready-made at IKEA India (29 October 2026), and ₹400 to ₹9,000 for a single wall shelf. Built-in showcases are priced by quote.
