Plan a small bedroom with a wardrobe as one system: to-scale 9x10 and 10x11 ft plans, where the bed can go, bedside shelves, lighting without a false ceiling, AC and fan, a dressing spot and a guest-cum-study room.
The best bedroom design for a small room with a wardrobe treats the room as one system: the wardrobe runs full height on the one wall that holds nothing else, the bed is a size smaller than you first think (a double in a 9 × 10 ft room, a queen at 10 × 11 ft), and its headboard goes on a wall with no door. Wall shelves replace bedside tables, surface-mounted lights replace the false ceiling, and one pale colour on walls and shutters makes the room feel larger than it measures.
About the numbers below: room sizes and heights are from the Model Building Bye-Laws 2016, fan clearances from IS 732, mattress sizes from Duroflex, AC sizes from LG India and fan sweeps from Atomberg. Product prices are from IKEA India and Philips India, including taxes, read on 29 Oct 2026. The furniture cost is a market range from one published guide, not a quote. Walkways, shelf heights and light positions in our drawings are our guidance, labelled as such.
This guide is about the whole room. For wardrobe depths and shutters, see our wardrobe design guide.
A 9 × 10 ft room is 90 sq ft, about 8.4 sq m. A 10 × 11 ft room is 110 sq ft, about 10.2 sq m. Between them they cover most second bedrooms in Indian 2BHK flats.
The Model Building Bye-Laws 2016 from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (clause 4.3.2) set 9.5 sq m for a home's main habitable room and 7.5 sq m, at least 2.1 m wide, for a second one. So a 9 × 10 room qualifies as a second bedroom, and 10 × 11 clears the main-room minimum. The same bye-laws set a minimum room height of 2.75 m (clause 4.3.1) and ask that windows and other openings, doors excluded, add up to at least one tenth of the floor area (clause 4.30.1.2). Your state's bye-laws may differ.
Choose the bed before anything else, because it takes half the floor. Duroflex lists the Indian double at 75 × 48 in (190 × 120 cm), the queen at 78 × 60 in (198 × 152 cm) and the king at 78 × 72 in (198 × 183 cm). It describes 10 × 10 ft as the minimum room for a queen.
For storage under the mattress, our coming post on storage beds compares box and hydraulic designs.
In a small room the door and window decide the plan. Three rules, all our guidance:
The door is in a side wall and opens against the window wall, so its swing ends before the foot of the bed. The double bed sits against the far side wall with its headboard on the end wall, which leaves 79 cm in front of a 180 cm wardrobe. Below the wardrobe there is room for a 75 cm dressing ledge, and a wall shelf with a reading light serves the open side of the bed.
The catch: one side of the bed is against the wall. That suits a guest room or a single sleeper; our coming guide to master bedrooms for couples starts at 12 × 12 ft.
The headboard takes the one long wall with no door or window. A 210 cm sliding wardrobe runs along the next wall, with 65 cm in front of it, and a 90 cm dressing ledge fills the rest of that wall. Each side of the queen bed gets a wall shelf and its own reading light. The extra foot of length goes to the foot of the bed: 100 cm to the window wall, enough to walk and draw the curtains.
Many flats put the only window where the headboard wants to go. Centre the bed on it or between two windows and keep the headboard below the sill. Where there is a window on each side of the bed, cushioned window seats with drawers below can take the place of bedside tables.
Asian Paints suggests "colour drenching" for small rooms: one colour on walls, skirting, window frames and doors, with furniture chosen to match. It recommends lighter neutrals such as pale blue, pale green, light brown and lavender, and suggests a light sky blue or lilac ceiling instead of plain white for a sense of depth. For a small bedroom, that means wardrobe shutters in the wall colour, so a wall of storage reads as wall.
Two bedside tables can take 90 cm of floor. Put that function on the wall instead:
These sizes are our guidance. Our coming post on bed back wall design covers headboards and switch heights in detail.
The bye-laws allow an air-conditioned room to drop to 2.4 m under a false ceiling (clause 4.3.1), but in a small room you can light well without one:
Decide every point before the painter starts: wiring usually runs in conduits chased into the walls, so moving a point later means breaking plaster. Our coming post on false ceilings for bedrooms covers the other route.
AC size. LG India's chart gives 1 ton for rooms up to 120 sq ft, which it labels small bedroom and study, and 1.5 ton for 120 to 180 sq ft. It advises one size up for a room with direct sun, on the top floor or in a very hot city. So both our rooms need 1 ton, or 1.5 ton on a sunny top floor in Delhi or Jaipur.
AC position. Put the indoor unit high on an outside wall, usually the window wall, so the pipe to the outdoor unit stays short. In both plans it faces the foot of the bed rather than sitting above the headboard. We found no published mounting height that applies to every model; check your unit's installation manual for its ceiling clearance before the electrician fixes the socket.
Fan size and height. Atomberg's chart gives a 900 mm sweep for 50 to 100 sq ft and 1,200 mm for 100 to 150 sq ft, with the blade tips at least 2 to 3 ft from walls. IS 732, the Indian code of practice for wiring (1989 edition), asks for at least 2.4 m from the floor to the lowest point of the fan and at least 300 mm from the ceiling to the blades. In a 2.75 m room that leaves a window of only about 5 cm, so use the shortest downrod the maker supplies. A tall wardrobe with a loft counts as a wall: in our 9 × 10 plan the fan moves off-centre, towards the bed, to keep about 60 cm from it.
Run the AC at 24°C with the fan on, as our bedroom trends for 2027 explains.
You do not need a dressing table. A wall-hung ledge about 75 to 90 cm wide and 30 to 35 cm deep, at desk height, with a mirror above and a stool that tucks under, fits beside the wardrobe in both plans (our guidance). Light the mirror from the sides, not only from above. With no free wall, put the mirror on a wardrobe shutter; our coming post on wardrobes with a mirror and dressing table shows how.
In most 2BHKs the 9 × 10 room is a study on weekdays and a guest room when parents visit. Plan for both:
For bed direction, our Vastu guide for bedrooms covers it in one place.
Market range: Design Cafe's 1BHK cost guide (17 Sep 2026) puts a bedroom's furniture (bed, side units and a compact study) at ₹1 to 2 lakh, one wardrobe at ₹60,000 to ₹1.2 lakh, and a storage bed at about ₹20,000 to ₹35,000 more. It does not say whether GST is included. These are one firm's published ranges, not quotes.
Most ideas here save money: wall shelves, surface lights and one paint colour cost less than bedside tables, a false ceiling and panelling. To see a small bedroom inside a whole-flat budget, read our room-by-room interior design cost guide or try MOA's free home cost calculator.
A full-height wardrobe on the one free wall, a modest bed with its headboard on a wall without a door, wall shelves and lights instead of bedside tables, and one pale colour throughout.
A double (120 × 190 cm mattress) in 9 × 10 ft, so a wardrobe still fits beside it. Duroflex calls 10 × 10 ft the minimum for a queen (152 × 198 cm); at that size the queen fits, but one side of it will be close to a wall.
Paint walls and shutters one light colour, hang curtains at ceiling height and wider than the window, put a full-height mirror beside the window, and keep the floor visible.
High on an outside wall, usually the window wall, blowing towards the foot of the bed rather than from above the headboard. LG India's chart gives 1 ton for rooms up to 120 sq ft, one size up for sunny or top-floor rooms.
No. Surface-mounted downlights, wall lights at the bed and a strip on the wardrobe loft light it well, and you keep the full height.
