All 5 architecture and interior design practices in Kolkata listed on MOA, with services, experience and direct contact. No paid placements and no commission.
Updated 17 Oct 2026: this list is built from the public profiles on Member of Architecture on that date. Details such as services and completed-project counts are supplied by each studio. Check the profile, and ask for references, before you appoint anyone.
There are 5 design practices in Kolkata listed on Member of Architecture: 3 architecture studios and 2 interior design studios. 3 of them have had their Council of Architecture registration verified, and 1 has published finished work on MOA that you can look at before making contact. This page lists every one, with what they do and how to reach them directly.
Worth being straight about the basis, because many "top architects" lists are advertising in disguise. This is not a ranking of the best architects in Kolkata: nobody can credibly produce that. It is every practice on MOA that works in the city, ordered by the work they have published on MOA and then by the number of completed projects they report.

Across the 5 practices listed, the services on offer are: 3d-Rendering, Construction Drawings, Contractor, Design Consultancy, Furniture Design, Interior Designing, Liaison, Plan Approvals, Turn-Key Projects. Not every studio does everything, so check the individual profiles. Scope is the most common source of disagreement later on.
Before you brief anyone, find out which authority sanctions plans for your plot. Inside the city it is the Building Department of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), working under the Kolkata Municipal Corporation Act, 1980 and the KMC Building Rules, 2009, which came into force on 15 September 2009. In New Town the sanctioning body is the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA), under the NKDA Act, 2007 and its own building rules of 2009. Other parts of the metropolitan area, such as Howrah or Salt Lake, come under different municipal bodies, so confirm yours first.
A few points from the rules and the two authorities' own pages that shape who you hire:
The rules have been amended by notification since 2009, and KMC's building page lists several amendments, so ask your architect to check the current position for your plot, especially for FAR, setbacks and road width. Of the studios above, Rhythm Space Design lists plan approvals and liaison among its services.
Most homeowners ask about fees first and regret it. These tell you more:
For a longer checklist, see 15 questions to ask before hiring an architect or interior designer.
Three models cover most of the Indian market: a percentage of project cost, a rate per square foot, or a fixed fee for a defined scope. Percentage fees are common on larger residential work, and per-square-foot pricing is more usual for apartment interiors and renovations. Ask which model a studio uses before discussing numbers, because the same total looks very different under each. Our guide to architect and interior designer fees goes into more detail, and the Kolkata construction cost breakdown helps you set a realistic budget for the build itself.
Not always an architect, but always a licensed professional. Within KMC, a small house up to 10 m high on ordinary foundations can be filed by a Licensed Building Surveyor, while taller or deeper buildings need an architect and engineers as well. In New Town, NKDA asks for a registered architect and an enlisted engineer. Interior work inside an existing flat usually does not need a permission, but anything affecting structure, plumbing stacks or the facade generally does, and housing societies have their own rules. Confirm with your authority before you begin.
Design and drawings typically take two to four months, approvals vary by authority and by how complete the file is, and construction of a full house usually takes a year or more. Apartment interiors are faster, commonly three to five months from design to handover.
No. Enquiries go straight to the studio, with no commission on either side.
Look for COA verification on their MOA profile, or confirm their registration with the Council of Architecture. Our COA guide explains how.
