How to fit a wardrobe into a 10x10 or 10x12 ft bedroom: sliding vs hinged clearance in a scale plan, corner and loft units, storage over the bed, mirror shutters and handle-less fronts.
The wardrobe design that works best in a small bedroom is a full-height unit on the wall beside the bed, with sliding or narrow hinged shutters, a loft up to the ceiling and light, plain fronts. In a 10 × 10 ft room with a queen bed, that leaves about 153 cm across the room for the wardrobe and every walkway, so the depth of the unit and the way its doors open decide whether the room still works.
About the numbers below: there is no Indian standard for wardrobe sizes. Room sizes and heights come from the Model Building Bye-Laws 2016, bed sizes from Sealy India, and wardrobe, door and fitting sizes from IKEA India, IKEA's PAX buying guide, Häfele and Blum. Walkway widths and the heights in our bed-wall drawing are our guidance, labelled as such. Prices are IKEA India's listed prices including taxes, read on 21 Oct 2026; the per sq ft range for carpenter-built wardrobes is a market range from MOA's cost guide, not a quote.
This guide is about fitting storage into 10 × 10 and 10 × 12 ft bedrooms. For depths, carcass boards and hardware in general, see our wardrobe design guide on sliding vs hinged.
A 10 × 10 ft room is about 3.05 × 3.05 m, or 9.3 sq m. That is slightly under the 9.5 sq m the Model Building Bye-Laws 2016 (clause 4.3.2) set for the main habitable room of a home, and above the 7.5 sq m allowed for a second room, which may be as narrow as 2.1 m. So under the model rules a 10 × 10 ft room works as a second bedroom rather than the only one (your state's bye-laws may differ), and it is the room where the wardrobe is hardest to fit.
Start with the bed. Sealy India lists a queen mattress at 198 × 152 cm (78 × 60 in) and a king at 198 × 183 cm. Put a queen against one wall of a 305 cm room and 153 cm is left across the width. A wardrobe on the side wall takes 60 to 66 cm of that, and the rest has to cover the walkway in front of it and the gap on the bed's other side.
The drawing shows the trade-off in centimetres.
So sliding is not magic in a 10 × 10 ft room. Its real advantage is that the walkway is never blocked by an open shutter, which matters when the walkway is also the route to the window or balcony. If you go hinged, ask for narrow shutters. IKEA India sells PAX hinged doors only 50 or 25 cm wide, and a 25 cm shutter needs just 25 cm to swing.
Bi-fold shutters fold back against themselves, so each pair swings only about half as far as one wide door. Häfele's Slido F-Fold61 fitting, for example, takes leaves up to 550 mm wide at 25 kg a pair, or 600 mm at 50 kg, 16 to 19 mm thick. Ask your carpenter which folding fitting they can source locally before you design around one.
A wardrobe can also fill the wall right up to the door frame, as in this Udaipur bedroom. Every centimetre of a short wall counts.
An L-shaped wardrobe turns a corner and uses two walls. IKEA India's PAX corner wardrobe is 210.5 cm along one wall and 160.5 cm along the other, built from 58 cm deep frames around a corner unit. The corner unit on its own is 53 cm wide, with shelves, and IKEA's PAX buying guide offers it 35 or 58 cm deep.
An L needs two free walls, and in a 10 × 10 ft room one of them usually holds the door or the window. Our guidance: an L suits a 10 × 12 ft room, or a room whose door sits in the middle of a wall. In a 10 × 10 room, a simpler corner move is to end a straight wardrobe in open shelves where it meets the bed, so the corner is reachable from the bedside.
In a small room, height is the cheapest storage. The Model Building Bye-Laws set a minimum room height of 2.75 m, with at least 2.4 m clear under any beam (clause 4.3.1). IKEA's buying guide needs 237 cm of ceiling for a 236 cm hinged PAX unit and 240 cm for sliding doors, so in a 2.75 m room roughly 35 to 40 cm is left above a full-height unit. Close that gap with a loft for suitcases and winter bedding.
Many flats already have a builder's concrete loft, or tand, over the wardrobe niche. The bye-laws (clause 4.6) cap such a loft at 1.5 m high, require 2.2 m of headroom under it and limit it to 25 per cent of the room's floor area. The wardrobe below it can only be as tall as that headroom, so measure under the slab before you order shutters.
When the side walls are taken, build around the bed. Two tall units flank the headboard, a shallow bridge cabinet spans above it, and a loft runs across the top. The tall units get the full 58 cm depth for hanging. Keep the bridge shallow: 35 cm, the depth of IKEA's shallow PAX frame, keeps it clear of your head when you sit up in bed.
Two practical notes, both our guidance. Fix the bridge to the wall and to the tall units, not to the headboard. And use the bridge for things you reach rarely, since you have to kneel on the bed to open it. If a bed-back wall of cupboards feels heavy, run the wardrobes along the side walls instead, as this Bokaro bedroom does with glass fronts on both sides of the bed.
A mirror on the wardrobe saves the wall a separate mirror would take, and it makes a small room look deeper. Off-the-shelf options exist in both door types:
One mirror shutter is usually enough. Put it where you can step back at least an arm's length to see yourself, which in plan B means the panel nearest the room door, not the one beside the bed (our guidance). Our coming post on wardrobes with a mirror and dressing table covers mirror lighting and sizes in detail.
In a small room, build the dressing table into the wardrobe rather than buying a separate one. This Vijayawada design runs a shallow ledge across the front of a two-door wardrobe and into a mirrored niche, with a stool that tucks underneath.
A wardrobe in a small bedroom is often the biggest surface in it, so its face sets the mood of the room.
For a wooden almirah look in a small room, a wood-grain laminate or veneer on a fitted unit gives the warmth without a freestanding almirah's gap above it. A loose almirah also leaves dust space behind and above, which a fitted unit taken to the ceiling does not.
Carpenter-built and modular wardrobes are priced per square foot of shutter face. MOA's room-by-room interior cost guide gives a market range of ₹1,200 to ₹2,200 per sq ft for hinged laminate units, more for sliding, and calls loft storage cheap per foot. As arithmetic on that range, a wardrobe as wide as plan A's (180 cm) and 7 ft tall has about 41 sq ft of shutter face, so roughly ₹50,000 to ₹90,000 before the loft. That is an estimate, not a quote.
For ready-made prices, IKEA India listed the 150 cm PAX/AULI mirror wardrobe at ₹43,100 and the PAX corner wardrobe at ₹1,12,300, both including taxes. The corner wardrobe's listing says delivery and assembly are extra. To see how a wardrobe fits a whole-flat budget, try MOA's free home cost calculator. If you want the wardrobe placed by Vastu as well, our Vastu guide for bedrooms covers it in one place.
A fitted, full-height wardrobe on the wall beside the bed, with a loft above. Choose sliding doors if the walkway in front is under about 75 cm, and narrow hinged shutters if it is wider. Light or glass fronts keep it from dominating the room.
Sliding, usually, but by less than people expect. Sliding doors need no swing space but add about 7.5 cm of depth, so in our 10 × 10 plan the bed gains only about 9 cm. The bigger win is a walkway that is never blocked by an open shutter.
For hanging clothes, plan on about 58 cm, the depth of IKEA's standard PAX frame. IKEA also makes a 35 cm deep frame, which suits folded clothes, shoes or an over-bed unit, but not a hanging rail across the width.
Yes, as tall units on either side of the headboard with a shallow bridge cabinet above. Keep the bridge about 35 cm deep and use it for things you reach rarely.
Take it to the ceiling so it reads as a wall, match the shutters to the wall colour, skip projecting handles, and break a wide front with glass or a mirror panel.
