Modular wardrobes are priced per sq ft of shutter face. Published 2026 rates, how lofts and fittings are billed, sliding vs hinged, finishes, GST, and worked costs for a 6 ft and an 8 ft wardrobe.
A modular wardrobe in India is priced per sq ft of its front, the width times the shutter height, and published 2026 rates run from about ₹1,200 to ₹2,500 per sq ft for standard wardrobes. Sliding doors add 20 to 30 per cent and solid wood goes past ₹3,000. So a 6 ft wide, 7 ft high wardrobe, 42 sq ft of shutter, costs roughly ₹63,000 to ₹1 lakh at one firm's published 2026 band, before the loft, accessories and GST.
About the numbers below: the per sq ft figures are a market range from pages firms have published themselves: Asian Paints Beautiful Homes (18 Apr 2026), HomeLane's 2026 wardrobe pages for Thane, Trichy, Chandigarh and Lucknow, and MOA's own room-by-room cost guide. All were read on 21 Oct 2026. They are published estimates, not quotes, and most do not say whether installation or GST is included. The worked examples use HomeLane's Thane band of ₹1,500 to ₹2,400 only to show the arithmetic. We found no published per sq ft rate for lofts or for each shutter finish on a like-for-like basis, and we say so where it matters.
Each source publishes its own band, for its own city and specification:
| Source and date | What the band covers | Published rate per sq ft |
|---|---|---|
| Asian Paints Beautiful Homes (Apr 2026) | Basic wooden wardrobe | ₹1,200 to ₹1,500 to start |
| Asian Paints Beautiful Homes (Apr 2026) | General range in its FAQ | ₹1,200 to ₹2,500 |
| Asian Paints Beautiful Homes (Apr 2026) | Premium solid wood (teak, mahogany) | Above ₹3,000 |
| MOA room-by-room cost guide | Hinged laminate units, market range | ₹1,200 to ₹2,200 |
| HomeLane, Trichy (2026) | Modular wardrobes | ₹1,500 to ₹2,300 |
| HomeLane, Thane (2026) | Modular wardrobes | ₹1,500 to ₹2,400 |
Sources: Asian Paints Beautiful Homes, HomeLane Trichy, HomeLane Thane, and our interior design cost guide, room by room.
Our earlier guides used ₹1,200 to ₹2,200 for hinged laminate. The firm pages reach ₹2,300 to ₹2,500 because their bands also cover better finishes and hardware, so the figures are consistent.
Before comparing rates, check what each quote multiplies them by. Quotes come in three forms.
This is the most common. Asian Paints' cost guide tells readers to multiply the height and width of the space: its example is a 7 ft high, 6 ft wide wardrobe, 42 sq ft, at about ₹1,800 per sq ft for good plywood and laminate, or ₹75,600 before extras. The rate is applied to the front but pays for the whole box behind it: sides, back, shelves, shutters, basic hardware and labour (our guidance, from how quotes are built).
Some carpenters quote per running foot, the width along the wall, which hides the height. The link is: rate per running ft = rate per sq ft × height. At ₹1,500 per sq ft, a 7 ft high wardrobe works out to ₹10,500 per running ft; take the same front to 9 ft with a loft and it is ₹13,500. Convert every quote to the same unit before you compare.
Factory systems and some brands price per unit. IKEA India lists its 100 × 58 × 236 cm PAX wardrobe frame at ₹13,000 including taxes, with doors, hinges and interiors sold separately, and delivery and assembly extra. HomeLane's city pages give totals for a 6 ft wardrobe. Per-unit prices compare well only when the units match.
Often, yes, but not always at the same rate. HomeLane's Thane page lists lofts with pull-outs and accessories as things that add to the final figure, and none of the sources we read publishes a separate loft rate. MOA's free cost calculator counts the loft at the full shutter rate, taking a wardrobe from 7 ft to 9 ft of front, while MOA's cost guide calls loft storage cheap per foot and worth taking. Ask the quote to show the loft as its own line, with its area and rate, so you can see what you are paying for it.
In most quotes the rate buys the box with its shelves, rails and basic hinges (our guidance). HomeLane's Lucknow page says internal drawers, pull-out baskets, lofts or lighting strips raise the cost by 10 to 20 per cent; Asian Paints suggests adding 10 to 15 per cent for custom internal fittings, drawers and premium handles.
The carcass is the box behind the shutters. Asian Paints ranks particle board as very budget-friendly but less durable, MDF as a middle ground, commercial and marine plywood as more moisture resistant, and solid wood as the premium, without a rupee figure for each. Which plywood grade suits a bedroom, a coastal flat or a bathroom wall is in our wardrobe design guide on sliding vs hinged.
This is the biggest visible jump. We found no published per sq ft rate for each finish on a like-for-like wardrobe, so here is what the sources say:
| Finish | What the published sources say |
|---|---|
| Laminate | Asian Paints: very affordable. A basic 6 ft hinged laminate wardrobe: ₹60,000 to ₹75,000 (HomeLane Thane), ₹65,000 to ₹70,000 (HomeLane Chandigarh). |
| Acrylic | Asian Paints: high-gloss acrylic pushes the price up. HomeLane Thane: high-gloss acrylic can take a 6 ft wardrobe past ₹1 lakh. |
| PU paint | HomeLane Thane: can cross ₹1 lakh for 6 ft. HomeLane Trichy: PU or glossy acrylic sits at the top of its ₹1,500 to ₹2,300 band. |
| Veneer | Asian Paints: a wood look below solid wood prices, but polishing and extra labour add to the cost. |
| Glass | HomeLane Thane groups glass shutters with acrylic and PU, which can cross ₹1 lakh for 6 ft. |
| Mirror | HomeLane Chandigarh: a 6 ft wardrobe with extras such as drawers, a pull-out tray and mirrored shutters costs ₹70,000 to ₹85,000. |
In short: laminate is the base; acrylic, PU and glass sit at the top.
HomeLane's Trichy, Thane, Lucknow and Chandigarh pages all put sliding wardrobes at 20 to 30 per cent more than hinged ones; the Chandigarh page puts it down to the extra cost of channels and tracks. Its Thane page gives a 6 ft sliding wardrobe at ₹75,000 to ₹85,000, against ₹60,000 to ₹75,000 for basic hinged laminate. Applied to the Thane band, 20 to 30 per cent more works out to roughly ₹1,800 to ₹3,120 per sq ft. That is our arithmetic, not a published rate.
Ask the quote to name the track brand and model, whether soft close is included, and the panel weight it is rated for. Tracks, depths and clearances are compared in our sliding vs hinged guide.
DesignCafe's January 2026 guide says installation is usually included in a modular wardrobe's price, and to confirm it; its December 2025 guide says delivery, installation and finishing can add 10 to 15 per cent. For carpenter-built wardrobes, Asian Paints puts carpenter charges at ₹300 to ₹500 per sq ft, without saying whether its example rate includes them.
Ask whether the rate includes GST, and at what rate. Since 22 September 2025, India's GST has a standard rate of 18 per cent and a merit rate of 5 per cent. In the GST Council's list of goods moved to 5 per cent, the only furniture named is furniture wholly made of bamboo, cane or rattan, so do not assume the lower rate for a board or plywood wardrobe. A wardrobe built into your flat may also be billed as a works contract: the GST Council's guide to works contracts covers the fitting out of immovable property and treats it as a supply of services. Ask for the HSN or SAC code and rate on the quote and invoice. At 18 per cent, a ₹1 lakh wardrobe carries ₹18,000 of GST.
Both wardrobes have 7 ft shutters and a 2 ft loft above, about 9 ft in all, as in the drawing. The rate is HomeLane's Thane band of ₹1,500 to ₹2,400 per sq ft; the sliding line adds HomeLane's 20 to 30 per cent to the shutters below the loft only. Figures are before GST.
| Option | 6 ft wide | 8 ft wide |
|---|---|---|
| Shutter face only (42 / 56 sq ft), hinged | ₹63,000 to ₹1,00,800 | ₹84,000 to ₹1,34,400 |
| Plus the loft at the same rate (54 / 72 sq ft) | ₹81,000 to ₹1,29,600 | ₹1,08,000 to ₹1,72,800 |
| Sliding shutters, hinged loft | ₹93,600 to ₹1,59,840 | ₹1,24,800 to ₹2,13,120 |
| Hinged with loft, plus 10 to 20% for fittings | ₹89,100 to ₹1,55,520 | ₹1,18,800 to ₹2,07,360 |
A check against the published totals: HomeLane's Thane page gives ₹66,000 to ₹90,000 for a 6 ft wardrobe, and its Lucknow page ₹68,000 to ₹95,000. Both sit inside our first row, which suggests, though the pages do not say so, that their 6 ft figure is for a wardrobe of about 7 ft without the loft. If a 6 ft quote is far above these, ask which line explains it: loft, finish, hardware or fittings.
Where the money goes in a whole flat is in our 2BHK interior cost guide for Pune: kitchen and wardrobes together carry about half of a mid-level budget.
For a whole-home budget, MOA's free home cost calculator prices interiors item by item, including wardrobes by shutter area, 7 ft tall or 9 ft with a loft. If you also want to place the wardrobe by vastu, our vastu for bedrooms post covers it.
Published 2026 rates run from about ₹1,200 to ₹2,500 per sq ft of shutter face, with HomeLane's city pages at ₹1,500 to ₹2,400. Acrylic, PU and glass sit at the top, and solid wood passes ₹3,000.
HomeLane says sliding wardrobes cost 20 to 30 per cent more than hinged ones. On its Thane band that is roughly ₹1,800 to ₹3,120 per sq ft, our arithmetic rather than a published rate. A 6 ft sliding wardrobe is listed at ₹75,000 to ₹85,000 on the same page.
Multiply width by shutter height (6 × 7 ft is 42 sq ft), then by the rate. Add the loft if billed, 10 to 20 per cent for fittings, and GST if it is not included.
Not always. Some quotes add the loft area at the full rate, some price it separately, and HomeLane lists lofts among the things that raise the final figure. We found no published loft rate, so ask for it as a separate line.
Laminate. HomeLane's Thane page puts a basic 6 ft laminate wardrobe at ₹60,000 to ₹75,000, and acrylic, PU or glass shutters past ₹1 lakh.
