How high to tile a kitchen wall, which tiles go on walls and floors, sizes and grout lines, epoxy vs cement grout for oil and haldi, slab backsplashes, and tile and laying prices per sq ft.
For a kitchen wall, tile a dado band from the counter to the underside of the wall units, usually about 600 mm (2 ft), and take the tile up to the ceiling behind the hob, where tadka smoke and steam hit hardest. Use glazed ceramic or glazed vitrified (GVT) tiles on the wall, matt or anti-skid vitrified tiles on the floor, and epoxy grout behind the hob and sink. Orientbell's April 2026 price table puts kitchen wall tiles at ₹34 to ₹356 per sq ft, and CPWD's Delhi schedule prices a laid ceramic dado at ₹1,112.70 per sq m, about ₹103 per sq ft.
About the numbers below: tile prices are Orientbell list prices (tables "updated on 28th April 2026"), read on 21 Oct 2026; Kajaria and H&R Johnson showed no prices on the pages we opened. Laying costs come from the CPWD Delhi Schedule of Rates 2023 (April 2023 Delhi prices, 18% GST on works included), a government rate book, not a shop quote. "Our guidance" marks MOA's professional judgement, not a code.
This guide covers heights, tile types, sizes, grout and cost. For what is fashionable, our tile trends 2027 post covers formats and colours, and kitchen trends 2027 covers shutters, counters and the slab backsplash.
In Indian site language, the dado is the tiled lower part of a wall, as against the painted upper part. CPWD's schedule uses the word the same way, pricing "tile work in skirting, risers of steps and dado". In a kitchen, the dado is the strip of wall between the counter and the wall units, the backsplash, plus whatever you add around the hob and sink.
We found no Indian code that fixes a kitchen dado height, so the heights below are common practice anchored to two maker guides. IKEA's METOD buying guide recommends "at least 50 cm between worktop and wall cabinet". Faber India's chimney guide says the space between stove and chimney "should be between 26 and 32 inches", about 660 to 810 mm.
| Kitchen | Where the tile stops | Typical height above the counter |
|---|---|---|
| Wall units above the counter | Underside of the wall units, with the tile tucked a little behind them so no gap shows (our guidance) | About 600 mm; IKEA's minimum gap is 500 mm |
| Behind the hob | The ceiling, or at least the top of the chimney duct cover | Full height (our guidance) |
| Open shelves or no wall units | A clean line at about 1,200 mm, or full height on the cooking wall | 1,200 mm or more (our guidance) |
Around a window over the sink, tile up to the sill and return the tile into it, so splashes do not soak the plaster (our guidance).
The wall behind the hob takes oil splatter, steam and heat every day. Our guidance is to tile it to the ceiling rather than stopping at the chimney hood, because steam and smoke rise past the hood, and painted wall behind a chimney duct is hard to clean or repaint. Buy it with the dado tile, from one batch, so the shades match.
All pressed tiles in India fall under IS 15622, which groups them by water absorption, the share of its own weight a tile soaks up. The difference between a wall tile and a floor tile is easiest to see in two makers' sheets from the same company:
| Property | Ceramic wall tile (Orientbell Sparkle, 300 x 450 mm) | Glazed vitrified tile (Orientbell GVT) |
|---|---|---|
| IS 15622:2017 group | B III, water absorption over 10% | Sheet cites ISO 13006 B Ia and IS 15622:2017 B Ib |
| Water absorption, maker's norm | 15 ± 2% | Average 0.5% or less |
| Breaking strength | Standard's minimum: 200 N (under 7.5 mm thick) | Maker's norm: 1,500 N minimum |
| Surface abrasion | Tested for floor tiles only | Class III to V, by design |
| Where it belongs | Kitchen walls only | Floors and walls |
The porous ceramic body suits a wall but is too weak for a floor where a steel kadhai will be dropped. Vitrified and GVT tiles are dense enough for both.
"Vitrified" on a box does not fix the group. CPWD defines vitrified floor tiles as absorbing "less than 0.08%", the B Ia group our flooring materials guide uses, while Orientbell's GVT sheet declares 0.5% or less, Group B Ib under IS 15622:2017. Ask which group the box declares.
IS 15622:2006 has makers size modular tiles to leave a nominal joint of 1.5 to 5 mm for wall tiles and 2 to 5 mm for the denser groups. The joint is where grease and haldi collect, so the number of joints matters more than the tile. On the same 1,200 x 600 mm patch of wall, a 25 mm mosaic leaves 80 m of grout per sq m, a 300 x 600 mm tile 5 m, and a 600 x 1,200 mm tile 2.5 m.
Cabinet sizes and costs for small kitchens are in our coming posts on modular kitchen design and modular kitchen price per sq ft.
Glazed tile faces resist stains well; the joints are the weak point. BIS's product manual for IS 15622:2017 lists the stain tests: glazed tiles are stained with methylene blue and potassium permanganate, unglazed tiles with staining pastes, iodine and olive oil, and both face household chemicals, acids and alkalis. Orientbell's Sparkle wall tile sheet declares it conforms on staining and household chemicals.
Grout makers are blunt about cement grout. Asian Paints' sheet for its SmartCare cement-based grout, for joints up to 5 mm, says: do not use it "when high chemical, impact, stain resistance, is required", and to use its epoxy grout instead. Pidilite's Roff Starlike, a two-part epoxy grout for 1 to 15 mm joints, is described as stain-resistant against "grease, gunk, or oil stains"; Roff asks for 24 hours between laying and grouting, and 48 hours for a full cure.
Our guidance:
The dado band need not be tile. Three alternatives have almost no joints:
An Indian kitchen floor is mopped daily and takes oil and water spills, so it needs a dense tile with grip:

| Tile (Orientbell list prices, per sq ft) | Range |
|---|---|
| Kitchen wall tile, 200 x 300 mm | ₹34 to ₹49 |
| Kitchen wall tile, 300 x 450 mm | ₹45 to ₹335 |
| Kitchen wall tile, 300 x 600 mm | ₹69 to ₹356 |
| Kitchen wall tile, 600 x 1,200 mm | ₹92 to ₹109 |
| Kitchen floor tile, 600 x 600 mm | ₹55 to ₹89 |
| Anti-skid tiles | ₹50 to ₹100 |
| Subway tiles (product listings) | ₹312 to ₹650 |
Orientbell's own pages do not always agree: its kitchen floor page text says prices "start at Rs 34/sq ft and go up to Rs 495/sq ft", and its subway table starts at ₹344 while products are listed from ₹312. Read the price on the product you choose. A single product example: Orientbell's 300 x 450 mm ceramic wall tile GFT SPB Dyna Grey Lt is listed at ₹72 per sq ft, "incl. of all taxes", though it showed out of stock when we checked.
Laying is the part most quotes blur. CPWD's schedule separates it: the tile alone is a basic material rate, and the item rate adds mortar, labour, overheads and GST.
Per sq m, that is ₹1,112.70 laid against a ₹225 tile for the dado (item 11.37A), and ₹1,464.85 against ₹486 for the floor (11.41A.3.1). CPWD puts an average mason at ₹857 a day.
| Item | Area or rate | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Dado band, 10 ft x 2 ft | 20 sq ft | |
| Behind the hob, 2 ft x 4.5 ft up to the ceiling | 9 sq ft | |
| Tile to buy, 29 sq ft plus 10% waste | 32 sq ft at ₹45 to ₹335 (300 x 450 mm) | ₹1,440 to ₹10,720 |
| Laying and everything except the tile, CPWD basis | 29 sq ft at about ₹82 | About ₹2,380 |
The ₹82 is CPWD's ₹103 laid rate minus its ₹21 tile rate, on 2023 Delhi prices; city rates and small-job minimums will differ. For a whole-home budget, try MOA's free home cost calculator.
There is no national standard. Common practice is about 600 mm (2 ft) from the counter to the wall units, and up to the ceiling behind the hob.
Glazed ceramic or GVT tiles, in the largest size your dado height allows, with epoxy grout behind the hob and sink.
Matt or anti-skid vitrified or GVT tile, usually 600 x 600 mm, with a declared slip-resistance value tested to IS 18433.
Orientbell's April 2026 table lists kitchen wall tiles from ₹34 to ₹356 per sq ft, and subway tiles from ₹312 to ₹650. Laying adds roughly ₹82 per sq ft on CPWD's 2023 Delhi rates.
