PVC, WPC, charcoal louvres, laminated MDF and HDHMR, fluted wood, acoustic panels and stone compared: price per sq ft, how each is fixed, and what makers say about damp, termites and fire.
The right wall panel design for a living room starts with the material, not the pattern. PVC panels and UV marble sheets are the cheapest at about ₹38 to ₹350 per sq ft, laminated MDF and WPC sit around ₹150 to ₹600, and fluted veneer or solid wood runs from ₹250 to ₹2,500, all before fitting. Real marble ranges from ₹80 for Indian Makrana to over ₹1,000 per sq ft for imported stone. Then choose how it is fixed: glued straight to the wall, on battens, or on clips, because that decides how the panel copes with a damp Indian wall.
About the numbers below: prices are market ranges published by DesignCafe (Feb 2026), Spacewood, JK Cement (Feb and Mar 2026) and Construction Estimator India, and seller listings on IndiaMART, all read on 22 Oct 2026. Per sq ft figures worked out from per-sheet or per-piece listings are our arithmetic. Prices are for material only unless stated; fitting and backer boards are extra, and most sources do not say whether GST is included. Moisture, termite and fire notes quote the makers' own pages; a maker's claim is not a test report. Figures marked "our guidance" are common practice, not a standard.
This post is about the panel materials. Our guides to bed back wall design and TV unit design for the living room cover the layout of those two walls, and our texture paint guide covers the painted alternative.
Three questions narrow the choice:
Most good walls mix two or three materials, as in this Mumbai bedroom by ArchiPod Design Studios: wood-grain panels behind the bed, a marble-look slab at one side and fluted panels on the return wall. For the wider look of living rooms now, see Living Room Trends 2027.
Read the chart as a shortlist, then ask the dealer for the product's data sheet.
What a PVC wall panel is: an extruded plastic board, hollow or solid, with a printed or foil face in wood, stone or plain colours. JK Cement lists hollow panels at 5 to 8 mm, solid at 8 to 10 mm and WPC-PVC composite boards at 8 to 12 mm.
PVC wall panel price per sq ft: DesignCafe gives ₹50 to ₹350 per sq ft, from ₹80 for bedrooms and ₹100 for living rooms, with installation ₹20 to ₹50 per sq ft extra (DesignCafe). Spacewood puts PVC panels from about ₹50 to ₹150 (Spacewood). JK Cement splits it by type: hollow ₹55 to ₹120 for material and ₹90 to ₹180 installed, solid ₹120 to ₹250 and ₹180 to ₹350 installed, designer or 3D ₹300 to ₹650. On IndiaMART, fluted PVC panels of 300 mm x 10 ft (about 10 sq ft each) are listed at ₹280 to ₹450 a piece (IndiaMART).
Moisture, termites and fire: JK Cement calls PVC water-resistant but warns that it "does not replace proper waterproofing" and only hides damp visually; PVC "is not digestible by termites"; and "most certified panels are flame-retardant (FR grade), not fireproof". Greenply describes its PVC boards as waterproof, fire-retardant and termite-proof (Greenply).
Durability and care: JK Cement expects 10 to 15 years indoors when properly installed. Clean with a microfibre cloth and mild soap, and in bathrooms seal the joints and keep some ventilation.
WPC (wood plastic composite) is the usual choice for fluted strips and louvres on a wall that sees humidity. CenturyPly describes its WPC boards as "100% waterproof", borer proof and termite proof; on fire it is more careful, saying the boards "might reduce the spread of flames". It recommends outdoor use only in covered areas away from harsh direct sun (CenturyPly).
WPC wall panel design price: DesignCafe gives ₹200 to ₹600 per sq ft for WPC and ₹250 to ₹500 for WPC fluted panels. JK Cement lists WPC-PVC composite at ₹180 to ₹400 for material and ₹250 to ₹500 installed. IndiaMART listings run from ₹80 per sq ft for thin 12 to 15 mm interior panels to ₹180 to ₹290 for 20 to 26 mm louvres (IndiaMART).
Every groove is a dust ledge: brush-vacuum fluted walls every couple of weeks (our guidance).
"Charcoal" panels are not wood. Asian Paints' Beautiful Homes catalogue describes its charcoal louvres as a mixture of charcoal and polystyrene, 2,400 x 125 mm, 11 to 18 mm thick, 3.28 sq ft per panel, sold in a minimum of 10 panels with a 5-year warranty, and lists them as waterproof and termite proof. It recommends pasting them onto a plywood or HDHMR base nailed to the wall, which is method B (Asian Paints). The catalogue gives no fire rating, so ask for one.
Price: IndiaMART sellers list charcoal louvres at about ₹240 to ₹2,000 per piece depending on width and thickness (IndiaMART). Worked out on the listed sizes, that is about ₹50 to ₹225 per sq ft, most between ₹100 and ₹170 (our arithmetic). Budget separately for the backer board. The same page lists flat 8 x 4 ft charcoal decorative sheets at about ₹1,495 per sheet, roughly ₹47 per sq ft.
This is the carpenter-made "wooden" wall, finished in laminate, veneer or paint. DesignCafe and Spacewood both give ₹150 to ₹400 per sq ft for MDF or laminate-on-MDF panelling, and JK Cement gives ₹200 to ₹450 for fluted MDF, which it says suits dry areas (JK Cement).
Moisture and termites: DesignCafe calls MDF "prone to moisture damage". HDHMR is the board to ask for on a humid or outside wall: Action TESA says its HDHMR is made from hardwood at over 850 kg/m³ and lists high moisture resistance and termite and borer resistance (Action TESA).
Fire: none of the MDF or HDHMR pages we read gives a fire rating. If you want one, ask for fire-retardant plywood as the backer: CenturyPly says its Firewall plywood was tested to IS 5509, ASTM E84 and BS 476 (CenturyPly).
Real wood looks and ages best, and costs the most. Spacewood gives fluted wood panels at ₹250 to ₹1,200 per sq ft depending on the veneer, DesignCafe gives wooden panels at ₹500 to ₹2,500, and JK Cement starts solid wood fluting at ₹500 per sq ft. DesignCafe adds that wooden panels need polishing and termite protection, and JK Cement notes that solid wood, being heavier, may need more secure fixing, sometimes over a plywood backing.
Keep solid wood and veneer to dry inside walls, and get the termite treatment written into the quote (our guidance).
Polyester (PET) felt panels absorb echo in a hall with hard floors. On IndiaMART, 9 to 12 mm PET panels are listed at about ₹50 to ₹99 per sq ft, and wooden slatted acoustic panels at ₹170 to ₹220 (IndiaMART). Some sellers claim an NRC of 0.7 to 0.9 and "Class A" fire performance, but we found no maker data sheet to check. Thin PET boards can be glued (method A); slatted panels go on battens.
UV marble sheets are printed plastic or resin sheets with a glossy UV coat. Listings for 8 x 4 ft, 3 mm sheets run from ₹1,200 to ₹2,999 a sheet, about ₹38 to ₹94 per sq ft (our arithmetic from IndiaMART). Sellers describe them as waterproof; none of the listings we read made a fire claim. They are glued straight to a dry, flat wall.
Real marble costs more and weighs more. Construction Estimator India lists 18 to 20 mm polished slabs at ₹80 to ₹250 per sq ft for Indian Makrana white, ₹300 to ₹650 for Carrara equivalents and ₹400 to ₹1,100 for imported Calacatta types, including GST but not installation (Construction Estimator India). Stone does not burn: a UK stone maker's specification lists natural stone slabs as reaction to fire Class A1, fixed with kerf clips, channels or undercut anchors (Albion Stone).
Direction rules for the TV and seating belong to vastu, not to the panel: see Vastu for the Living Room if they matter to you.

JK Cement prices a 12 x 10 ft PVC feature wall at ₹18,000 to ₹45,000; DesignCafe puts labour at ₹20 to ₹150 per sq ft. For a whole-room budget, read Interior Design Cost in India, room by room or try MOA's free home cost calculator.
A hollow or solid plastic board, usually 5 to 10 mm thick (JK Cement), with a printed wood, stone or plain face, fixed on battens.
₹50 to ₹350 per sq ft plus ₹20 to ₹50 for installation (DesignCafe), or ₹90 to ₹350 installed (JK Cement).
In our view, laminated HDHMR or WPC fluting suits most Indian living rooms: wood looks, humidity and termite resistance by their makers' accounts, and ₹150 to ₹600 per sq ft. Keep real veneer or stone for one feature wall.
Not until the damp is fixed. JK Cement warns that PVC hides damp without solving it; after repairs, use a moisture-resistant panel on battens so the wall can breathe (our guidance).
