Study table design for a bedroom: desk heights and depths, adjustable desks for kids, chair, screen and lamp setup, sockets, storage, small-room layouts and October 2026 prices.
A good study table for a bedroom is about 740 to 750 mm high, 500 to 600 mm deep and at least 1,000 mm wide, with a chair that lets the feet rest flat and a screen whose top sits at or just below eye level. In a small bedroom, the desk works best under the window, inside the wardrobe run or in a corner as an L; where floor is really short, a wall-mounted fold-down desk takes none when it is closed.
About the numbers below: desk sizes and prices come from IKEA India and Urban Ladder pages read on 22 October 2026; IKEA's product pages say their prices include all taxes, with delivery and assembly extra. Posture rules come from the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and IKEA's ergonomics guide, and light levels from the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS), because we could not find an Indian standard for a home desk that we could open and read in full. The custom carpentry figures are a market range from one portal's June 2026 guide that does not say whether GST is included. Anything marked "our guidance" is common practice, not a rule.
Give these measurements to your carpenter, or check them on a product page.
| Measurement | What to aim for | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Desk top height | 740 to 750 mm for an adult | IKEA India's MICKE desk is 75 cm high; IKEA says to fix its NORBERG wall table so the top is at about 74 cm |
| Leg room under the top | Generally 50 to 72 cm high | OSHA |
| Depth | 600 mm with a monitor; 450 to 500 mm for a laptop only | OSHA asks for the screen at least 50 cm away; IKEA India's desks run from 40 cm (TORALD) to 80 cm deep |
| Width | 1,000 to 1,200 mm for one person; 1,800 mm for two | Our guidance |
| Space behind the desk | About 900 mm to pull the chair out | Our guidance |
Depth is the number people get wrong: a 450 mm "computer table" leaves the screen too close once a keyboard sits in front of it. OSHA puts the preferred viewing distance at 50 to 100 cm, with the monitor directly in front of you (OSHA, desks). With a 600 mm top, the screen sits at the back and the keyboard 100 to 150 mm from the front edge, which is IKEA's 4 to 6 inches.
Set the chair and screen in this order:
The same rules apply to an adult working from home, who needs a proper chair before a nicer desk (our view).
A fixed 750 mm desk is too high for a young child, and a child-sized desk is soon outgrown. An adjustable desk solves both.
With a fixed carpenter-made desk, adjust the chair instead, and add a footrest so a child's elbows stay level with the top. Check it each school year (our guidance).
For two children sharing a room, our kids room design for two kids post in this series has bunk and twin plans with shared desks.
A ceiling light alone leaves the page in your own shadow. CCOHS gives these light levels (CCOHS):
So a student switching between a screen and a notebook needs a dimmable desk lamp. Three placement rules:
For warm and hidden light across the rest of the bedroom, see Lighting Trends 2027.
Plan the power before the carpentry, or an extension board ends up on the floor:
In a 10 × 10 ft bedroom, three desk positions work:
Plan A. The best daylight, on a wall with no other use. Turn a screen side-on or fit a roller blind, and in a child's room fit a grill, since the desk is a step up to the window.
Plan B. Leave a 1,000 to 1,200 mm niche in the wardrobe run and carry the lofts across it, so it reads as one built-in wall. Hinged shutters beside it open into the chair space, so sliding ones suit it better; our wardrobe design guide compares the two.
Plan C. An L uses a corner that a bed or wardrobe rarely fills. Keep the inside corner free of drawers so the knees fit.
In a smaller room, a wall-hung desk takes no floor and a fold-down one takes none when shut. IKEA India's NORBERG wall-mounted drop-leaf table is 74 × 60 cm, cost ₹6,990 on 22 October 2026, and IKEA says to fix it so the top is at about 74 cm and that it must be securely anchored (IKEA India). A carpenter-made one should hang on a solid wall, not a thin partition (our guidance).
Two people need about 1,800 mm of desk, 900 mm each, more with two monitors, and a lamp and socket plate each (our guidance). Our master bedroom for couples post in this series shows a work corner in a 14 × 16 ft plan.

Market range, custom carpentry: NoBroker's June 2026 guide puts a pull-out or fold-down desk within a wardrobe at ₹35,000 to ₹70,000, a corner wardrobe with study table at ₹40,000 to ₹85,000 and an integrated side-by-side wardrobe and desk at ₹45,000 to ₹90,000. It says installation of ₹5,000 to ₹12,000 may be charged separately, and it does not say whether GST is included (NoBroker). For an adult, about 740 to 750 mm. IKEA India's MICKE desk is 75 cm high and its NORBERG wall table is fixed at about 74 cm. For children, an adjustable desk such as IKEA's PÅHL (59, 66 or 72 cm) or a chair with a footrest is better than a fixed low desk.
About 1,000 to 1,200 mm wide and 600 mm deep with a monitor, or 450 to 500 mm for a laptop, with about 900 mm behind it (our guidance).
A desk built into the wardrobe run, a wall-hung desk shelf, or a fold-down desk such as IKEA's NORBERG (74 × 60 cm, ₹6,990 on 22 October 2026). All three leave the floor clear.
Ready-made, from about ₹2,500 at IKEA India and ₹3,000 at Urban Ladder to ₹30,000 for solid wood, read on 22 October 2026. A custom wardrobe with a study table ran ₹35,000 to ₹90,000 in NoBroker's June 2026 market range, before installation.
With the window to one side, so daylight falls across the desk and not onto the screen, and the lamp opposite the writing hand.
