Which laminate is best for a wardrobe: 1 mm HPL outside, a 0.7 to 0.8 mm liner inside, the finishes that hide fingerprints, edge banding for humid cities, and 2026 prices per 8 x 4 ft sheet.
The best laminate for a wardrobe is a 0.8 to 1.25 mm high-pressure laminate (HPL) made to IS 2046 on the outside, in a matt, suede or wood-grain finish, with a 0.7 to 0.8 mm liner laminate on the inside faces and an edge band on every cut edge. Laminate both faces of every shutter so it stays flat. A full 8 x 4 ft sheet of 1 mm matt laminate costs ₹1,990 on one maker's 2026 online price list, about ₹62 per sq ft including GST, and premium finishes run from about ₹3,000 to ₹8,900 a sheet.
About the numbers below: sheet prices are Royale Touche's own online prices for 1220 x 2440 mm (8 x 4 ft) sheets, which it says include GST, read on 29 October 2026. They are one maker's list prices for the sheet alone, not a market range, and not a fitted rate. Greenlam, CenturyPly, Stylam and VIR publish sizes and specifications but no prices on the pages we opened, and the Merino and Virgo sites did not load for us. Finish ratings and colour advice are labelled "our guidance".
| Part | What to ask for | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Outer shutter face | HPL to IS 2046, 0.8 to 1.25 mm, matt, suede or wood-grain | Hides marks; thicker sheets resist chipping better |
| Inside of shutters and carcass | Liner laminate, 0.7 to 0.8 mm, light colour | Balances the shutter and makes clothes easy to see |
| Edges | PVC or ABS edge band on all four edges of every shutter | Stops damp getting into the board through cut edges |
| Core board | 16 to 19 mm plywood, MDF or HDHMR | CenturyPly lists 16 to 19 mm as common for shutters and sides |
Board grades (MR, BWP, HDHMR) and where each suits are in our wardrobe design guide on sliding vs hinged, so this post stays on the laminate itself. Board thickness is from CenturyPly's plywood guide for wardrobes.
Decorative laminate is layers of resin-treated kraft paper, a printed decorative paper and a protective overlay, pressed together at high temperature and, for high-pressure laminate, usually more than 7 MPa. The Indian standard is IS 2046:1995. BIS says it was first published in 1962, revised in 1969 and 1995 to align with BS EN 438 and ISO 4586, and classifies laminates by wear, impact and scratch resistance (BIS).
CenturyPly's specification table shows what the standard asks of a 1 mm sheet: thickness within ±10 per cent, at least 350 revolutions in the surface wear test, and at least 2 N in the scratch test. CenturyPly lists its own figures as ±5 per cent, over 400 revolutions and 3 N (CenturyPly). Ask each brand for this table, and look for the IS mark on the sheet.
VIR Laminate calls 0.8 mm the most routinely used wardrobe thickness, cheaper and easier to bend round curves, and says 1 mm resists abrasion and chipping better and feels more solid (VIR Laminate). The sheets we opened on Royale Touche's wardrobe laminates page are 1 mm or 1.25 mm thick (Royale Touche). Our guidance: 1 mm for shutters that children, pets and daily use will knock, 0.8 mm only for curved or low-use fronts, and 1.25 mm when a premium finish only comes in that thickness.
A liner is a thinner laminate for the faces you see only with the doors open: the back of every shutter and the inside of the carcass. CenturyLaminates' Liner Pro comes in 8 x 4 ft sheets, 0.72 mm and 0.8 mm thick, in suede and matt (CenturyPly).
Best inner laminate for a wardrobe, our guidance: a light, plain or fine-weave liner in matt or suede. Light colours make dark clothes easy to see, and a fine texture hides hanger scuffs that a glossy liner would show.
What the makers say, with our guidance on where each finish works:
THOMAS+ASSOCIATES' Private Residente 1 in Cochin pairs two finishes: glossy white shutters in the centre, and walnut wood-grain at the sides and on the study desk. Our view: this is a good way to use gloss, because the wood-grain shutters at the ends, which hands and hips brush most, hide marks.
Our guidance, from the makers' notes above: anti-fingerprint super matt hides fingerprints best, then matt, suede and wood-grain. Dark high gloss shows the most, because every smudge and fine scratch catches the light. A busy wood-grain or texture hides scratches better than a plain colour. Before you order, rub an oily thumb across the sample.
Makers' online catalogues are good for shortlisting, but CenturyPly and Royale Touche both say their on-screen images are only a guide and the physical sample or colour may differ. Ask the dealer for A4 samples of your final two or three. Look at them on the wardrobe wall in daylight and under your bedroom lamps.
Laminate makers publish a light reflectance value (LRV) for some shades, from about 0 for black to 100 for pure white. Greenlam lists its AFX White X at 92.85 and Dove at 60.61, for example (Greenlam AFX). Our kitchen cabinet colour guide explains LRV and Indian room light in more detail.

The Composite Panel Association, the North American board makers' body, says warp comes from unbalanced construction. A panel stays flat when the laminates on its two faces are similar, which it says is best achieved by using the same material on both sides (CPA).
In practice, our guidance:
Greenlam's pasting manual explains the monsoon problem: as humidity rises, the board takes up more moisture than the laminate and sheds it later, which can bubble the sheet. Its advice (Greenlam):
Then seal the edges. REHAU India's retail edge bands come 0.8 mm and 2 mm thick, and its zero-joint bands claim an "extremely heat and moisture resistant bond" (REHAU India). Our guidance for Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi, Kolkata and other humid cities: 2 mm bands on shutter edges, matched to the laminate colour, and a band on the top and bottom edges too, where damp gets in unseen. CenturyPly suggests HDHMR for wardrobes in rooms with attached bathrooms or coastal humidity (CenturyPly). For walls and roofs in heavy-rain areas, see our post on building materials and monsoon detailing in Kerala.

Inner laminate price. We found no published retail price for liner sheets. Trade magazine Ply Reporter wrote in October 2021 that 0.72 mm liner had crossed ₹400 a sheet (Ply Reporter), and in September 2024 that makers had raised 0.72 mm liner by ₹20 a sheet (Ply Reporter). These are trade figures, not shop prices.
Worked example, our arithmetic: a 6 ft wide wardrobe with three 2 x 7 ft hinged shutters. An 8 x 4 ft sheet gives two 2 x 7 ft shutter faces, so the outer faces need two sheets: ₹3,980 in RTX1-MN 132 matt, or ₹7,300 in the leather finish. MOA's room-by-room cost guide puts a hinged laminate wardrobe at ₹1,200 to ₹2,200 per sq ft of front, so these 42 sq ft come to about ₹50,400 to ₹92,400 fitted. The outer laminate is about 4 to 15 per cent of that, so a better finish need not change the quote much. Ask what a finish upgrade adds, line by line. Our coming post on wardrobe price per sq ft covers the rest, and MOA's free home cost calculator gives a first estimate for a whole home.
From Greenlam's manual:
A 1 mm HPL made to IS 2046 in matt, suede, anti-fingerprint or wood-grain, with a 0.7 to 0.8 mm liner inside and every edge banded.
A light-coloured matt or suede liner, 0.72 to 0.8 mm thick, on the back of every shutter as well as inside the carcass.
The sheet alone costs ₹62 to ₹114 per sq ft for the Royale Touche sheets in our table, and ₹278 for metallic, including GST. A fitted hinged laminate wardrobe is ₹1,200 to ₹2,200 per sq ft of front in MOA's cost guide.
Matt for most homes: it hides fingerprints and does not glare in a small room. Keep gloss to a feature panel or the lofts.
