Box, drawer, full and half hydraulic storage beds compared: what fits inside, gas-spring ratings against mattress weight, clearances in a 10 x 12 ft room, bed height for parents and dated prices.
The best bed design with storage depends on how often you open it and how much floor is around the bed. A full hydraulic bed lifts the mattress on gas springs and suits razais and suitcases you reach a few times a year, but needs about 3 ft clear at the foot. Drawers suit weekly things but need about 1 m beside the bed, and a box bed with lift-off lids is cheapest but means taking the mattress off. On Wakefit, the same queen bed cost ₹13,469 with box storage and ₹21,330 with hydraulic storage when we checked on 29 October 2026.
About the numbers below: gas-spring ratings and mattress limits are from Ebco, Godrej Interio and IKEA India. Bed and mattress sizes, weights and prices are from Wakefit, Godrej Interio and IKEA India product pages, and clearances are from Duroflex and Kurlon. We read all of them on 29 October 2026. Prices are each retailer's listed price on that day, often a sale price, so they change week to week. Wakefit and IKEA say their prices include all taxes; Godrej Interio's page does not say. Sizes marked "our guidance" are common practice, not a maker's figure.
Almost every storage bed sold in India is one of four types.
| Type | How you get in | Best for | Floor it needs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Box with lift-off lids | Take the mattress off, lift a board | Things you reach once or twice a year | Room to stand and to put the mattress |
| Drawers | Roll a drawer out | Bedsheets, towels, weekly things | Drawer depth plus kneeling room |
| Full hydraulic | Lift the foot; gas springs take the weight | Razais, blankets, suitcases, festive things | 3 to 4 ft in front (Duroflex) |
| Half hydraulic | One half lifts; the other half is a lidded box | A smaller lift with a cheaper fitting | As full hydraulic |
Duroflex's bed size guide says to "factor in 3-4 feet of clearance in front for easy lifting" for hydraulic lifts and box storage alike (Duroflex). Our coming post on master bedrooms for couples uses the same figure.
A box bed and a hydraulic bed hold the same amount, because both use the whole space under the mattress. The difference is the lid. In a box bed you strip the bed, lift the mattress and then lift a loose board: fine for winter razais opened in November and closed in March, not for anything you need monthly.
A hydraulic bed puts the mattress on a hinged platform held up by gas springs. Godrej Interio describes box storage as "a simple, enclosed space beneath the mattress platform" and says people who open it often prefer hydraulic (Godrej Interio).
How much space is that? IKEA India gives the inside of its MALM ottoman bed, a lift-up bed for a 160 x 200 cm mattress, as 161 x 202 cm and 28 cm deep (IKEA India). By our arithmetic that is about 910 litres. The same bed with two storage boxes has drawers 97 x 59 x 15 cm inside, about 86 litres each, or roughly 170 litres for the pair (IKEA India). A lift-up base holds about five times what two drawers do.
Half hydraulic splits the difference. Godrej Interio's Arcadia V2 has a half hydraulic lift on one part and a "half box compartment" on the other. Ebco's Pro-Lift Mini fitting is sold for this kind of "partial storage under beds": it opens to 45°, for a lifting section of 2.5 to 3 ft, with a dead load of 10 to 15 kg (Ebco).
Drawers are the only type you open without touching the bed, so they suit weekly things: bedsheets, towels, children's clothes. They hold far less, and each drawer needs its full depth in front of it plus room to kneel. The MALM drawer above is 59 cm deep; add about 45 cm to kneel or crouch (our guidance) and you need roughly 1,040 mm beside the bed.
As our small apartment trends post puts it: drawers for weekly things, a lift-up base for seasonal bedding. A lift-up base needs no floor beside the bed, but it does need room to stand where it lifts, usually the foot.
A hydraulic bed only feels light if its gas springs match the mattress: too weak and the platform drops, too strong and it is hard to close. Makers publish the numbers:
Mattress weights vary widely. IKEA India lists its 12 cm ÅFJÄLL foam mattress in 160 x 200 cm at a package weight of 13 kg, and its 28 cm VÅGSTRANDA pocket-sprung mattress in the same size at 58 kg (IKEA ÅFJÄLL, IKEA VÅGSTRANDA). The heavy one is past IKEA's own 50 kg limit.
So tell the seller or carpenter which mattress goes on the bed before the springs are chosen. Two safety rules from the makers: Godrej Interio says its beds must not be opened without the mattress, because the base "would spring up rapidly", and that the lock must be engaged every time; Ebco says its gas springs are "highly pressured" and must not be dismantled or painted. Godrej also recommends a mattress at least 5 inches (12.7 cm) thick on its queen hydraulic beds.
Depth decides what fits, not just volume. Our guidance, using the IKEA inside sizes above:
Our coming post on wardrobes for small bedrooms puts the wardrobe at the foot of the bed in a 10 x 12 ft room, leaving 108 cm in front of it and 76 cm each side of a queen mattress. Measured to a queen frame of about 1,650 x 2,100 mm (our guidance, as in the master bedroom post), that is 960 mm and 700 mm.
So in a small room, a hydraulic or box bed is the better storage bed. For wardrobe depths and sliding versus hinged shutters, see our wardrobe design guide.
A storage bed closes off the air under the mattress, which matters in a humid city or against an outside wall that gets damp in the monsoon.
For the wider look of bedrooms now, see Bedroom Trends 2027.
Storage beds tend to be high. Our coming post on bed back walls takes the mattress top of a typical box bed as about 500 mm (our guidance), and for a parent with stiff knees, height matters more than storage.
In a care home in Dublin, staff set each resident's bed so that, sitting on its edge, their feet were flat on the floor with the hip or knee "just above 90 degrees", and recorded half as many falls from bed in the six months after as in the six months before (British Geriatrics Society). It is one small study, but easy to copy: sit your parent on a firm chair, find the height at which their feet are flat and knees just above a right angle, and measure from the floor to the top of the seat. Aim the mattress top, pressed down, close to that height (our guidance).
For parents, our guidance: no lift-off box lids, which mean lifting the mattress; a hydraulic bed with springs matched to the mattress so the pull is light; no low drawers they must kneel to reach. A thinner mattress lowers the top and lightens the lift.
Most "wooden" storage beds sold online are engineered wood: particle board or MDF with a laminate or foil finish. Solid sheesham costs more and weighs much more. On Godrej Interio, a queen half hydraulic bed in particle board on a 1.2 mm metal understructure weighs 101 kg, a queen full hydraulic bed in metal and particle board 154 kg, and a queen full hydraulic bed in sheesham 198 kg (Godrej Interio). All three arrive knocked down.
For the wall behind the headboard, see our coming post on bed back wall design. Bed direction is a vastu question rather than a design one; if it matters to you, read Vastu for Bedrooms.

Within one design, Wakefit charged ₹980 more for box storage than for none, and ₹7,861 more again for hydraulic. Wakefit's prices include taxes and free carpenter installation; IKEA's include taxes, with delivery and assembly extra. We found no published rate for a carpenter-built hydraulic bed, so get two or three quotes and ask which gas springs they will fit. For a whole bedroom budget, see our interior design cost guide, room by room, or try MOA's free home cost calculator.
Hydraulic, if you open the storage more than a few times a year. A box bed holds the same for less money but means taking the mattress off. On Wakefit's Taurus the difference was ₹7,861.
Duroflex suggests 3 to 4 ft clear in front of a hydraulic or box storage bed. In a 10 x 12 ft room with the wardrobe at the foot, a centred queen leaves about 960 mm, just enough.
Only if the gas springs are rated for it. Godrej Interio's largest lift takes a mattress up to 60 kg; IKEA's MALM ottoman up to 50 kg.
One where they sit on the edge with feet flat and knees just above a right angle. Measure that on a firm chair.
Yes, used as the makers say: never open it without the mattress, always engage the lock and never take the gas springs apart.
