When a wardrobe in a wall niche works: the 620 mm depth it needs, beams and columns, which walls never to cut, damp outside walls, rented flats, and steel almirah prices against a built-in for the same wall.
Wardrobe design in a wall works when the niche is about 620 mm deep (a 600 mm wardrobe plus a 20 mm air gap), when the recess comes from columns or cross walls rather than from cutting a structural wall, and when the wall behind it is dry. If the flat is rented, the outside wall is damp and cannot be fixed, or you expect to move within a few years, a freestanding almirah is the better buy: a 90 cm steel almirah listed at ₹23,390 to ₹27,900 from Interio by Godrej and Nilkamal on 29 October 2026.
About the numbers below: steel almirah sizes and prices are the listed (sale) prices on the makers' own product pages, read on 29 Oct 2026; they change often, and Interio's pages do not say whether GST is included, while Nilkamal's say "inclusive of all taxes". Built-in costs use a market range of ₹1,200 to ₹2,500 per sq ft of wardrobe front, from Asian Paints Beautiful Homes (18 Apr 2026) and HomeLane's 2026 Thane page (₹1,500 to ₹2,400); these are published estimates, not quotes. Air gaps, plinths and wall advice are our guidance (common practice) unless a standard is named.
"Wardrobe in the wall" rarely means a wardrobe carved out of a wall. A 230 mm brick wall, the thickness used in our wall materials guide, could never hold a 600 mm deep wardrobe even if you cut it right through. The niche almost always comes from the plan:
Plan for about 600 mm of wardrobe from back panel to shutter face. IKEA's PAX frames sold in India are 58 cm deep before the doors (IKEA India), which matches the 58 to 60 cm used in our sliding vs hinged wardrobe guide. On an outside or bathroom wall, add a 20 mm air gap behind it, so the niche needs about 620 mm. If it is shallower, the wardrobe simply stands proud of the column.
India's Model Building Bye-Laws 2016 set habitable rooms at least 2.75 m high, with at least 2.4 m of clear headway under any beam (MoHUA, clause 4.3.1.1; your state's rules may differ). So a beam can sit 30 cm or more below the ceiling, right where the loft goes. Measure the height under the beam, not the ceiling, and ask the carpenter to notch the loft around it or stop the loft at the beam. Asian Paints notes that custom carpentry can be built around beams (Beautiful Homes).
Never a structural wall, and no wall until someone has checked what it carries. If unsure, ask a structural engineer.
The older Indian way is a "cement almirah": concrete or stone shelves set into a recess left in the wall while the house was built, closed later with wooden shutters. It is cheap, solid, and what IS 1905 prefers: a recess planned at construction, not cut afterwards. Its weakness is damp. If the recess backs onto an outside wall, line the shelves with laminate or board and keep clothes in cotton bags (our guidance).
An outside wall is where built-in wardrobes go wrong. Greenply says a wardrobe near a bathroom wall, window, damp corner or external wall needs better moisture resistance (Greenply). In order:
If the wall is still damp and you cannot fix it, for example in a rented flat, do not build in. Stand a freestanding almirah a hand's width off the wall instead (our guidance).
India's Model Tenancy Act, 2021, which states adapt into their own laws, says a tenant shall not carry out any structural change or erect any permanent structure without the landlord's written consent, and lists doing so as a ground for eviction (MoHUA, sections 21(2)(h) and 26(1)). Your state's tenancy law and your agreement decide the details. Even drilling anchor bolts is worth a line in writing from the landlord.
Moving is where steel wins. Interio by Godrej (the Godrej Interio brand, now at interio.com) says its almirahs come pre-assembled or knock-down depending on the model, and that its own team assembles knock-down ones after delivery (Interio). Nilkamal's care note says not to move or push its Magna almirah without dismantling it (Nilkamal). A modular built-in can also be taken apart, but it was cut to one niche and rarely fits the next room (our view).
Here is what the makers' own pages listed on 29 October 2026. All are lockable. The Interio models are delivered knock-down, and Nilkamal lists the Magna as knock-down (KD) too.
| Model | W × H × D (cm) | Weight | Listed price (MRP) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Interio Neolite 2-door, 1 locker, 4 shelves | 90 × 196.5 × 50 | 42 kg | ₹23,390 (₹26,532) |
| Interio Slimline 2-door, 1 locker, 4 shelves | 90 × 195 × 50.7 | 65.1 kg | ₹27,090 (₹34,557) |

| Nilkamal Magna Office Almirah Large, 4 shelves | 90 × 197 × 51 | 62 kg | ₹27,900 (₹37,000), incl. taxes |
Sources: Interio Neolite, Interio Slimline 2-door, Interio Slimline 3-door, Nilkamal Magna. Interio's full steel almirah list ran from ₹19,990 for a 2-door Luminex NX to ₹85,990 for a 3-door Slimline XL with locker and drawers (Interio steel almirahs). Warranty was one year on the Interio models and three years on the Nilkamal.
Two things stand out. Steel almirahs are 50 to 51 cm deep, about 10 cm shallower than a built-in. And at 195 to 197 cm tall, they leave about 80 cm of bare wall in a 2.75 m room, unless a builder's loft sits above.
Compare them by the front, the way built-ins are priced. The Interio Slimline 2-door's front is 90 × 195 cm, about 18.9 sq ft, so ₹27,090 works out to roughly ₹1,430 per sq ft. That sits inside the ₹1,200 to ₹2,500 market range for a built-in, near its lower end. Our arithmetic, not a published rate.
On one 6 ft stretch of wall, two 90 cm steel almirahs cost about ₹54,000 to ₹56,000. A built-in with 7 ft shutters (42 sq ft) costs ₹50,400 to ₹1,05,000, or ₹64,800 to ₹1,35,000 taken to 9 ft with a loft, before fittings and GST, and it holds more because it is deeper and taller.
Both are priced per sq ft of front. Asian Paints puts carpenter charges at ₹300 to ₹500 per sq ft, says a basic carpenter-made wardrobe can be slightly cheaper if you source the materials yourself, and that a carpenter takes about 10 to 15 days to build and finish one; modular wardrobes offer better factory finishes and quicker installation (Asian Paints Beautiful Homes). HomeLane's Thane page puts modular wardrobes at ₹1,500 to ₹2,400 per sq ft (HomeLane). In awkward niches a carpenter scribes to the site; modular units need fillers. How quotes are measured, lofts and GST are in our draft guide to wardrobe price per sq ft, and the whole-room picture is in our room-by-room interior cost guide.
We found no published Indian data on whether built-in wardrobes raise resale prices, so this is reasoning, not evidence. A built-in stays with the flat and gives a buyer storage on day one, though a dated finish may be torn out. An almirah goes with you. If you own and will stay, build in; if you will sell soon, keep it simple and neutral.

Only where the plan already gives you a recess, such as between a column and a cross wall. Never cut columns, beams or load-bearing walls; ask a structural engineer if unsure.
On 29 October 2026, 90 cm 2-door models were listed at ₹23,390 to ₹27,900 (Interio, Nilkamal), and Interio's 3-door Slimline at ₹49,290.
In a flat you own with a dry wall, usually yes: it uses the wall to the ceiling. Renting, a damp wall or a move soon favour the almirah.
About 600 mm for the wardrobe, plus a 20 mm air gap on an outside or bathroom wall, so roughly 620 mm. A steel almirah needs only 50 to 51 cm.
Not without the landlord's written consent, under the Model Tenancy Act's rule on permanent structures and most agreements.
