Sofa and furniture trends for 2027, from low deep sofas and green and brown upholstery to cane, modular pieces, beds, outdoor seating and Indian craft, with sizes and fabric advice for Indian homes.
Furniture heading into 2027 is lower, softer and more honest about its materials. Sofas sit low and deep but come in more sizes, upholstery colour moves towards greens and browns, wood shows its grain, cane and woven cord return to frames, and more pieces fold, stack or split for small flats. Here is what the 2026 fairs, design press and Indian makers show, and how to buy each piece for dust, monsoon, pets, children and grandparents.
About the trends below: each one cites a named, published source: the April 2026 Milan furniture fair reports, a 2026 designer survey, paint and fabric makers' own pages, Indian makers' collection pages, or projects MOA members have published. Sofa sizes are examples from one retailer's product pages, not a standard. Where we give our own judgement, we say "our view". Facts are as of 18 October 2026. Layout and the TV wall are covered in our living room trends post, so this one stays with the furniture itself.
Houzz's report from the 2026 Milan fair, by Greta La Rocca, names "ultra-comfortable sofas" with low profiles, horizontal lines and full volumes as one of its 12 trends (Houzz). Wallpaper* design editor Rosa Bertoli saw a counterpoint: lacquered parts added to soft seating, such as Molteni&C's Julian sofa by Vincent Van Duysen in wood, fabric and lacquer, and Living Divani's The Edge by Piero Lissoni, wrapped on three sides in a lacquered container (Wallpaper*). The pillowy, frameless sofa now shares the floor with one that has a visible base and edge.
How to use it at home: depth matters more than shape in an Indian flat. Across seven sofas on IKEA India's product pages, overall depth runs from 78 cm for a compact two-seater to 105 cm for a sofa-bed, and seat depth from 49 to 69 cm (IKEA India). Our view: in a joint family, buy the deep sofa for lounging but keep one firm, upright seat with arms for elders, and choose a raised base or legs so the floor underneath can be mopped.
Houzz reported green in many shades at Milan, shifting towards blue and paired with beige, terracotta and rust. The 1stDibs survey of 468 interior designers, published on 17 November 2025, found 33% naming chocolate brown as the colour of 2026, up from 17% in 2022, with burgundy at 21% (1stDibs). On the paint side, Sherwin-Williams named Celery SW 6421, a soft green, as its 2027 Colour of the Year on 15 September 2026 (Sherwin-Williams; date from Hunker), and the designers it quotes pair Celery with walnut, oak and brass (Sherwin-Williams STIR). We will add Indian paint brands' 2027 colours here as they are announced.
The quieter shift is performance fabric. In India, D'Decor launched FabriCare as a line of "easy care" upholstery and curtain fabrics made for "busy households with children or pets", tested in an in-house NABL-accredited lab and sold with a three-year limited warranty (Indian Retailer).
How to use it at home: our view, for Indian conditions:
Houzz's "finishes you'll want to touch" trend singles out Taracea's Maria sideboard for its highlighted natural grain, and its "knots and weaves" trend picks handwoven rope as a standout material. The 1stDibs survey found 27% of designers naming wicker and rattan furniture as a 2026 trend. Indian makers show the same move: Idiom says it designed its Aasan sofa because "Indians like to lounge and sprawl", and gave it cane weave on all exterior faces and oxford-weave cotton cushions (Idiom). Among MOA projects, the bedrooms of Shanti Vanam by AAY Design in Hyderabad (2026) show beds with cane-weave headboards.
How to use it at home: solid wood moves with humidity, so ask how the timber was seasoned. The Bureau of Indian Standards' IS 287 sets the maximum moisture content for timber used in furniture and cabinet making by climate zone: 10% where average humidity is under 40%, rising to 15% where it is above 67%, the zone the standard links with the hot, moist coast of South India (BIS IS 287:1993). Our view: keep cane out of direct sun and rain, dust it with a soft brush, and use it on headboards, chair backs and shutters where it gets air on both sides.
Houzz reported modular sofas gaining ground at Milan, along with coffee and side tables made in several heights so one table serves tea, work or a seated meal. For a 1BHK or 2BHK, the useful version is a sofa that becomes a guest bed: IKEA India lists the FRIHETEN three-seater sofa-bed at 225 cm wide, opening to a 144 by 199 cm bed (IKEA India).
How to use it at home: our view is that modules beat sets in rented and compact homes. Two modules and a pouf can become a three-seater, a corner or two single seats in the next flat. Before you order, measure the lift, the stair turn and the main door, not only the wall. Nesting tables and a storage ottoman do more than a fixed centre table when relatives arrive for a festival. Our room-by-room interior cost guide shows where loose furniture sits in a flat's budget.
Wallpaper* saw tables become statement pieces, with bases such as B&B Italia's Abaco by Ronan Bouroullec and Baxter's layered marble Zaho by Christophe Delcourt, and a fresh run of tubular chairs, including Cassina's reissue of a 1966 cantilever chair by Nicos Zographos. Houzz noted bar stools gaining arms and upholstered backs, and Kartell's Lillybet chair, shaped for long meals.
On MOA, the Aadhyashree farmhouse by re:soch in Patan (2025) is designed for a family that hosts often, with an open kitchen, a breakfast bar and a dining area that opens to a courtyard, and its dining chairs are upholstered in sage green.
How to use it at home: Indian meals are long and shared, so comfort beats a dramatic base. Our view: choose an extendable table if you host, two chairs with arms for elders, and upholstery with a wipeable or easy-clean finish near food. Seal marble and stone tops against haldi and oil. If direction matters to your family, our guide to Vastu for the dining area covers table placement.
The clearest bed evidence is in MOA members' 2026 projects. The TEAM G Farm House by VishwArchitecture in Hyderabad shows a slim metal four-poster on a timber base in its renders, and the master bedroom of Springfeild 54 by AAY Design in Vijayawada is described with a curved upholstered headboard against layered fluted detailing.
How to use it at home: our view is that the Indian choice is storage against cleaning. A box or hydraulic storage bed holds quilts and festival things in a flat with few lofts, but dust gathers inside it, so line the box and open it each season. An open frame on legs is easier to clean and suits a larger home with good wardrobes; our wardrobe design guide helps plan that storage. Choose an upholstered headboard with a removable cover.
Houzz's "indoor-outdoor dialogue" trend lists pieces for patios and balconies, including Todus's Baza round daybed with a powder-coated stainless steel frame and quick-drying foam, and Minotti's modular Bézier Cord Outdoor sofa. Its "knots and weaves" trend shows handwoven rope on outdoor seating. On MOA, the Terrace Garden by Rippotai Architecture in South Delhi (2025), designed for an elderly couple, uses mild steel frames and wooden details with "scattered seaters" among the planting.
How to use it at home: our view: on an open terrace, choose powder-coated metal, teak or synthetic cord, with quick-drying foam and cushions you can carry indoors when the rains start. Keep natural cane, bamboo and jute for a covered balcony, as in the photo above. A jhoola needs a ceiling hook or frame sized by a structural engineer or the swing maker, not a guess. For plants and placement, see Vastu for balconies and terraces.
Phantom Hands in Bengaluru describes its work as "rooted in South Asian Modernism", with re-editions of significant 20th century designs from the region and a Project Chandigarh collection (Phantom Hands). Its Niwar Collection with the Swiss studio BIG-GAME, developed over 2022 and 2023, wraps sofa and lounge-chair frames in niwar, the thick cotton tape used on Indian daybeds and chairs, around handspun linen upholstery (Phantom Hands). At the 14th India Design ID in February 2026, themed "The Age of Design Syncretism", Outlook Luxe's Priyamvada Rana reported The Wicker Story from Hyderabad reworking cane and rattan weaving, Weave Craft's wicker and carved woodwork from Décor Harvest (Outlook Luxe).
How to use it at home: one craft piece carries a room: a niwar or cane chair, a jhoola, a carved console. Our view: mix it with plain modern pieces rather than buying a full "ethnic" set, and ask the maker how to re-tension or re-weave it, because that is what keeps craft furniture in use for decades.
Pieces that solve a daily problem, such as a washable cover, a firm seat, a sofa-bed or a bed with sensible storage, outlast any colour. For last year's picture, see Indian home design trends for 2026.
Low, deep sofas with full cushions, sofas with a visible wood or lacquered frame, modular pieces, and colour moving towards greens and browns, according to the 2026 Milan fair reports and a 2026 designer survey.
A tightly woven, mid-tone fabric with an easy-clean or washable finish and zipped removable covers. Avoid looped bouclé and open weaves if you have cats or dogs.
Compact sofas on IKEA India run about 78 to 79 cm deep, standard three-seaters 88 to 95 cm and deep or sofa-bed designs 95 to 105 cm. In a narrow room, the compact range leaves more space to walk.
Yes, indoors and on covered balconies. Keep it out of direct sun and rain, and choose powder-coated metal, teak or synthetic cord for open terraces.
