Dining table sizes for 4, 6 and 8, round vs rectangular, the room each needs, tops from wood to sintered stone, small-flat tables, low dining, lighting and prices.
A 6-seater dining table needs a top of about 170 to 180 by 80 to 90 cm, and a clear room of about 360 by 270 cm (11 ft 10 in by 8 ft 10 in) once chairs can be pulled out. A 4-seater needs about 120 by 80 cm and a room of about 300 by 260 cm. Round tables seat 4 at 103 to 115 cm across and need a squarer room.
About the numbers below: table sizes and seat ratings come from IKEA's own product pages, and the space per person and clearance behind chairs from IKEA's planning guides. Room sizes are our arithmetic from those figures. Where no maker publishes a figure (round tables for 6 and 8, square tables, seat heights, floor-level tables), we say "our guidance". Prices are listed retail prices we read on 21 October 2026, for the table only unless stated, and they change often. They are not a market range.
Where the table sits and which way people face is covered in our guide to Vastu for the dining area, and this year's chair and table styles in sofa and furniture trends 2027. This post is about choosing the table itself.
Two numbers decide every size. IKEA's planning guide says each person needs about 60 cm of eating space along the table edge, and asks for a minimum of 80 cm between the table and whatever is behind it (IKEA). IKEA Indonesia's guide gives 90 cm to walls or other furniture, and about 120 by 90 cm as the standard size for four (IKEA Indonesia). We use 90 cm in the drawings below, because 80 cm is tight once a chair is pulled back.
| Seats | Shape | Table size | Room needed (90 cm a side) | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | Rectangular | 120 × 80 cm | 300 × 260 cm | IKEA ÅLHULT, rated for 4 |
| 4 | Round | 103 to 115 cm across | 290 × 290 cm | IKEA DOCKSTA and STOCKHOLM 2025, rated for 4 |
| 4 | Square | 90 × 90 cm | 270 × 270 cm | Our guidance (IKEA rates a 74 cm square for 2) |
| 6 | Rectangular | 168 to 180 × 74 to 90 cm | 360 × 270 cm | IKEA HAUGA and ÅLHULT, rated for 6 |
| 6 | Rectangular, chairs at the ends | 140 × 85 cm | 320 × 265 cm | IKEA MÖRBYLÅNGA, rated for 6 |
| 6 | Round | 140 to 150 cm across | 330 × 330 cm | Our guidance |
| 6 | Oval (round with leaf) | 155 × 110 cm | 335 × 290 cm | IKEA INGATORP, rated 4 to 6 |
| 8 | Rectangular | 200 to 240 × 80 to 90 cm | 420 × 270 cm | IKEA LISABO 200 cm, rated 6 to 8 |
| 8 | Oval | 230 × 90 cm | 410 × 270 cm | IKEA STOCKHOLM 2025, rated 6 to 8 |
| 8 | Square | 150 × 150 cm | 330 × 330 cm | Our guidance |
Seat ratings are from the product pages on IKEA India, and for INGATORP from IKEA Jordan, since it is not listed in India. Every IKEA dining table we checked is 74 or 75 cm high.
A pulled-out chair with someone on it takes roughly 55 cm behind the table edge (our guidance), so IKEA's 80 cm minimum leaves about 25 cm, enough to squeeze past only when everyone tucks in. With 90 cm, someone can pass behind a seated diner sideways. If a side of the table is the main route from the kitchen to the hall, give it about 110 cm. Our Vastu dining post explains the slightly stricter US kitchen-planning figures (81, 91 and 112 cm) behind that number.
The jump from 4 to 6 adds 60 cm to the room's length, not its width. That is why a 6-seater usually fits a builder flat's living-dining hall: the dining end is often long and narrow. Measure the clear space between walls, sofa back and door swings, then subtract 180 cm for the largest table that fits.
If the room is under about 340 cm long and you still want six seats for visiting relatives, an extendable 4-to-6 table beats a fixed 6-seater squeezed in.
Our guidance on each shape:
In a 1BHK or compact 2BHK, the dining table usually shares the hall with the sofa. Three designs give back floor on ordinary days. Our small apartment design trends post covers the rest of the flat.
Our guidance: a bench on one side slides fully under the table, so that side loses most of its 55 cm chair zone, which helps in a narrow hall. Children squeeze in, and it takes the 60 cm per person just like chairs. But a bench has no back, everyone has to climb over it, and getting up means the whole bench moves. Use it on the wall side for children and younger adults, and keep chairs with arms on the open side for elders.
Indian food is hard on table tops: haldi stains, oil seeps, lemon is acidic and kadhais come straight off the flame. Here is how each top copes, from the makers' care guides.
Sheesham, teak or acacia can be sanded and refinished, so scratches are not permanent. Solid wood swells and shrinks with humidity; our furniture trends post explains the seasoning standard to ask for. Our guidance for care: wipe spills at once, put hot vessels on a trivet, and choose a sealed or lacquered finish over a plain oiled one if you cook with a lot of haldi.
The Heirloom House shows a live-edge top that keeps its natural cracks.
A veneer table is a thin sheet of real wood over a board. IKEA India's MÖRBYLÅNGA, for example, has a particleboard top with oak veneer and a tinted acrylic lacquer, and its care note is to wipe with a cloth dampened in a mild cleaner, then wipe dry (IKEA India). It is lighter and more stable than solid wood, but a deep scratch or a water-swollen edge cannot be sanded away.
Marble is the classic Indian dining top and the most delicate. Stone-care maker Fila lists vinegar, lemon, cola and wine as slightly acidic substances that damage the shiny finish on marble and polished stone (Fila). Our note: tamarind, tomato and pickle fall in the same group. Italian stone maker Salvatori says its protective treatment buys a couple of hours before oil, wine or coffee becomes a stain, that no product completely protects stone from staining, and that hot pots belong on a trivet or board (Salvatori). Haldi with oil is the stain to wipe first. Granite is denser and less fussy; our natural stone guide compares the stones.
Engineered quartz resists stains better than marble but not heat. Caesarstone's care page says hot cookware should always be placed on trivets and hot pads, and spills wiped at once (Caesarstone). Some retailers write "marble (quartz)" on a listing, so ask which one you are buying.
Cosentino's care guide for its Dekton sintered surface says frying pans, saucepans and casseroles can be placed directly on it after use, except on 8 mm slabs, which need protection, and that a naked flame should be avoided (Cosentino). It credits the surface's practically zero porosity for its stain resistance. Check the slab thickness on any sintered dining top before trusting it with a hot kadhai.
Insist on toughened glass. Saint-Gobain toughened glass sold through L&T SuFin is described as four to five times stronger than annealed glass, breaking into relatively small pieces, and made to IS 2553 (L&T SuFin). Our guidance: glass shrugs off haldi but shows every fingerprint and is noisy with steel plates; use mats under hot vessels and round the corners.
Many Indian homes still eat on the floor, on a mat or a low wooden patla, with a thali in front or a low chowki to hold it. We found no maker's standard for these, so the figures here are our guidance. A low dining table of about 30 to 40 cm suits cross-legged sitting on cushions of 5 to 10 cm. Keep the zone on an easily mopped floor, store the cushions in a nearby drawer, and let the same rug serve as the living area after the meal.
Elders with knee trouble may not manage the floor, so keep two chairs and a normal-height surface close by.
Lighting maker Lucide puts the bottom of a dining pendant between 60 and 80 cm above the table top, advises a shade no wider than half the table, says a long table of about 100 by 200 cm usually needs more than one lamp, and spaces lamps by their own diameter (Lucide). EGLO gives 80 cm, plus or minus 20 cm, and suggests a height-adjustable fitting if you are unsure (EGLO).
In this Vijayawada residence render, two pendants hang low over the breakfast ledge, much as you would hang them over a table. Our guidance for Indian rooms: keep the pendant out of the ceiling fan's sweep, because blades turning above a light cast a flicker on the table, and use a warm white so food looks like food.

For a stone-top set, Wooden Street listed its Gladys 6-seater sheesham set, with a top described as "marble (quartz)" and six upholstered chairs, at ₹93,989 against an MRP of ₹1,49,000, out of stock, with no note on GST (Wooden Street). We could not find a published rate for a carpenter-made table in solid sheesham or with a granite top, so get two written quotes that name the timber, the top's thickness and the finish. For the whole dining area, our home cost calculator helps set a budget.
About 170 to 180 cm by 80 to 90 cm for three a side; IKEA rates its 168 and 170 cm tables for six. With a chair at each end, 140 by 85 cm also seats six.
About 120 by 80 cm rectangular, or 103 to 115 cm across if round. Allow a clear room of about 300 by 260 cm for the rectangle.
An extendable 4-to-6 table, a gateleg table that folds to about 26 cm, or a wall-mounted fold-down top. A round table suits a small square corner.
It is beautiful but needs care: acids such as lemon dull its polish, and oil and haldi can stain it. Seal it, wipe spills at once and use trivets for hot vessels. Quartz and sintered stone need less care.
About 60 to 80 cm from the bottom of the shade to the table top, according to the lighting makers Lucide and EGLO.
