How to design a shoe rack at the entrance: pairs for a family of four, tilt-out vs shelf depths, a 450 mm seat, ventilation, wall-hung units and 2026 prices.
A good shoe rack at the entrance sits right where shoes come off, on the wall the main door does not swing towards, holds about 20 pairs for a family of four, and is hung about 150 mm off the floor so you can mop under it. Make it 180 to 300 mm deep if it is a tilt-out cabinet, or 350 to 400 mm deep if it has flat shelves behind a door, and add a seat at about 450 mm so people can sit to tie laces.
About the numbers below: Cabinet sizes, pair counts and prices are from IKEA India, Nilkamal and Wooden Street product pages, read on 29 Oct 2026; retail prices change often and include GST as listed. Clearances, seat and shelf heights without a maker's figure are common practice and labelled as our guidance. The custom-carpentry figure is arithmetic on MOA's published market range for storage, not a quote.
Count what lives at the door, not every shoe you own. Our guidance for a family of four: each person keeps four to six pairs in daily use there (school or office shoes, sports shoes, chappals, house slippers and one festive pair), which comes to 16 to 24 pairs. Plan for about 20, plus space for two guest pairs on the floor tray. Seasonal, party and rarely worn pairs can go to a bedroom wardrobe.
Width decides how many pairs fit on each shelf. A national survey of 1,01,880 people by CSIR-CLRI, run from December 2021 to March 2022, found that Indian feet tend to be wider than Western feet (Business Today). So allow about 300 mm of shelf width per adult pair (our guidance): two adult pairs on a 600 mm shelf, three pairs of children's shoes or chappals.
This is the size most people get wrong. In a tilt-out cabinet the shoes stand up at an angle in a bin that swings forward, so the cabinet only needs to be as deep as the shoe is tall when tilted. In a shelved cabinet the shoe lies flat, so the inside must be longer than your longest shoe, plus the back panel and the door.
IKEA's own range shows it. Its tilt-out cabinets run from 18 cm deep (TRONES) through 22 cm (GULLABERG, 4 compartments) and 28 cm (BISSA) to 30 cm (BRUSALI, and HEMNES, which IKEA lists outside India at 89 x 30 x 127 cm for about 14 pairs). Its shelved KLEPPSTAD and MACKAPÄR cabinets are 35 cm deep. Several buyer reviews on the MACKAPÄR page say larger shoes only go in at an angle, which is why we suggest 380 to 400 mm for a built-in shelved cabinet if the family has big sports shoes (our guidance).
The steeper the bin, the worse it takes bulky trainers, boots and heels. A 180 to 220 mm tilt-out suits a narrow passage and chappals, a 300 mm one takes most adult shoes, and anything chunkier goes on flat shelves.
For shelved cabinets, set the clear height between shelves by the footwear, and use adjustable shelves so you can change it later. Our guidance, measured to the underside of the shelf above:
| Footwear | Clear height | Pairs per 600 mm shelf |
|---|---|---|
| Chappals, slippers, kolhapuris | 100 to 120 mm | 3 |
| Men's formal shoes, flats | 150 mm | 2 |
| Sports shoes, school shoes | 180 mm | 2 |
| Heels, wedges | 200 to 220 mm | 2 to 3 |
| Ankle boots, gumboots | 300 mm or more, on the lowest shelf | 1 to 2 |
A seat is the single most useful addition, especially for elders and children. Our guidance: set the seat at about 450 mm, the same height as a standard sofa seat, so it is easy to sit and rise from; IKEA's hallway benches are a little higher, at 52 cm overall (NIPÅSEN and the MACKAPÄR storage bench). Make the bench 350 to 400 mm deep: IKEA's are 35 and 37 cm, and IKEA says NIPÅSEN is tested for a maximum load of 100 kg. A 900 mm long bench seats two people side by side.
The drawing below puts it together for a family of four: a tall louvred cabinet for about 20 pairs, an open niche for keys, a wall-hung bench with an open cubby for daily chappals, a mirror above the bench, and a tray on the floor for wet shoes.
Hang the mirror with its bottom edge at about 900 mm and its top near 2,000 mm (our guidance), so both a seated child and a standing adult can see themselves.
Closed shoe cabinets smell when damp shoes go in and air cannot move. The NHS advises not wearing the same shoes two days in a row and letting shoes dry out before wearing them again (NHS), so give each person two daily pairs and let the off-duty pair dry in the open first.
For the cabinet itself, our guidance:
Indian floors are mopped daily, and a floor-standing unit traps dust and water at its base. A wall-hung cabinet and bench, about 150 mm off the floor (our guidance), lets the mop pass underneath and leaves room for a shoe tray. It needs a solid wall: most shoe cabinets have to be fixed to the wall anyway, and IKEA's listings note that fixings depend on the wall material and are sold separately.
In a flat, the entrance is often just a 1,200 mm wide passage behind a 900 mm main door. The rule: never put the cabinet behind the door, where it stops the leaf opening fully. Put it on the opposite wall and keep a clear path of about 900 mm, the same 900 mm that the Government of India's barrier-free guidelines set as the minimum clear width of an entrance door, as noted in our main entrance Vastu guide.
For the main door itself, see our coming guide to main door design for home, and for shoes in a living room that opens off the door, our coming guide to living room design in Indian style.
A built-in wooden unit (plywood or HDHMR with laminate or veneer) suits most flats; near a mopped floor and wet shoes, ask for a water-resistant board grade and edge-banding on every cut edge. Solid sheesham or mango wood racks with cane or slatted doors breathe well and cost the most. Metal racks are airy and easy to wipe; check the finish in coastal cities. Plastic cabinets are light and washable.

On Wooden Street's shoe rack listing the same day, sale prices ran from ₹2,499 for a small engineered-wood rack (₹2,999 with a seat) to ₹42,999 for large sheesham and mango wood cabinets, against list prices well above them, in some cases more than three times higher. Treat those as sale prices on one day, not fixed rates.
Built-in by a carpenter or interior firm. MOA's room-by-room cost guide gives the market range for storage as ₹1,200 to ₹2,200 per sq ft of shutter face for hinged laminate units. As arithmetic on that range, the 600 x 1,950 mm cabinet in the drawing above has about 12.6 sq ft of shutter, so roughly ₹15,000 to ₹28,000, before the bench, cushion, louvres and any tilt-out fittings, which we could not price from a published rate card. Get the board grade, hinge brand and shutter finish written into the quote.
Make the bench 350 to 400 mm deep, as IKEA's hallway benches are (35 and 37 cm), with the seat about 450 mm high (our guidance).
Let shoes dry before they go in, rotate daily pairs, and ventilate the cabinet: a gap underneath, louvred or perforated shutters, shelves set back from the back panel and an outlet at the top. A charcoal pouch absorbs some odour but does not dry shoes.
A wall-fixed tilt-out 180 to 220 mm deep, on the wall the main door does not swing towards, hung off the floor, with hooks and a mirror above.
On 29 Oct 2026, IKEA India listed shoe cabinets from ₹1,690 (TRONES, pack of two) to ₹11,990 (GULLABERG, 2 compartments), Nilkamal plastic cabinets were ₹3,460 to ₹6,310, and Wooden Street's sale prices ran from ₹2,499 to ₹42,999. A built-in cabinet works out at roughly ₹15,000 to ₹28,000 on MOA's published storage range.
